HP ProCurve Networking Voice-over-IP Solutions Interoperate and Outperform Competitive Offerings in Tolly Group Tests

 • 16 March, 2004 09:58

ASIA PACIFIC, Australia, March 16, 2004 - HP ProCurve Networking today announced independent test results indicating that the HP ProCurve enterprise local area network (LAN) switching infrastructure is truly interoperable with industry voice-over-IP (VoIP) solutions, while offering better networking performance.

Two recent performance studies commissioned by HP and conducted by The Tolly Group, an industry leader in independent technology testing, confirm that HP ProCurve products are a more efficient VoIP alternative to other industry players, including Cisco and 3Com.

In an interoperability test, The Tolly Group compared the toll quality of Cisco AVVID traffic running over an HP ProCurve switching infrastructure to the toll quality delivered across a pure Cisco Catalyst infrastructure. The study also tested the ability of the HP ProCurve infrastructure to successfully support VoIP traffic generated by Mitel and 3Com IP private branch exchanges (PBXs).

The test determined that HP ProCurve delivered VoIP call quality at the same level as Cisco Catalyst and 3Com NBX networks. These results indicate that a Cisco LAN switching platform is not required to obtain consistently high call quality with AVVID.

Additionally, the test showed that Mitel VoIP traffic over an HP ProCurve network exceeded the call quality of the AVVID traffic running over Cisco Catalyst networks.

In a separate study, also commissioned by HP, The Tolly Group evaluated the HP ProCurve switching infrastructure capability to provide a suitable transport for VoIP traffic at high call-quality levels from a variety of IP PBX vendors. This second interoperability test determined that HP ProCurve Networking infrastructure effectively supports popular VoIP solutions from 3Com, Avaya, Cisco, Mitel, NEC and Nortel Networks, while maintaining exceptionally high-quality voice traffic.

The Tolly Group study also found that HP ProCurve products support the transmission of high-quality VoIP traffic generated by Mitel that far exceeds levels of other VoIP products tested. HP ProCurve Networking and Mitel are sold and promoted together by many resellers; both companies stress interoperability and choice for their customers.

"There is a misperception in the marketplace that voice quality will be improved if the VoIP gear is from the same manufacturer as the infrastructure," said John McHugh, vice president and general manager, HP ProCurve Networking Business. "Other vendors use this market confusion to try to force customers into a homogeneous proprietary environment that cannot meet the needs of individual customers. These test results reaffirm that HP ProCurve products are interoperable with the offerings from other vendors, delivering the highest quality solutions while ensuring customer choice and flexibility."

To help customers get the best return on their information technology investments, HP offers the HP ProCurve family of wired and wireless products, services and solutions - including Ethernet switches, routing switches and network-management applications - which allows customers to build networks based on open standards that meet current and future needs for security, performance and reliability.
