TippingPoint protects customers against new Microsoft vulnerabilities

Company’s Digital Vaccine® Service Protects Against Microsoft Vulnerabilities, including Zero Day Threats

Sydney, Australia – 15 February, 2006 – TippingPoint, a division of 3Com and the leader in intrusion prevention, today announced that its TippingPointTM Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) provide protection for all bulletins announced by Microsoft today, including the zero day vulnerability in Internet Explorer when processing Windows Meta Files (WMF). In addition to issues patched by Microsoft today, the TippingPoint IPS also protects against the zero day Microsoft vulnerability in HTML Help Workshop Files, for which Microsoft has not yet issued a patch or advisory.

TippingPoint devices were inoculated against these threats through the Digital Vaccine service, a remote update service that provides regular protection against the latest threats. Vulnerabilities can be exploited to compromise business networks and gain access for malicious purposes. TippingPoint provides vulnerability protection in the form of Virtual Software Patches to preemptively protect customers against exploits and worms.

“In today’s Microsoft Bulletins, we see a mix of vulnerabilities that can lead to Denial of Service, information disclosure, and remote code execution on Windows systems with Office and Windows Media Player. Non-Microsoft Internet browsers are also vulnerable to these flaws when browsing the Internet, and could lead to Spyware infections and disclosure of sensitive information,” said Dinesh Sequeira, manager of the Digital Vaccine security research team. “TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention Systems, updated through the Digital Vaccine service, are the best solution to provide preemptive protection for vulnerabilities prior to the emergence of an exploit.”

The TippingPoint IPS provides protection for the following security bulletins announced by Microsoft:
(1) MS06-004
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer
(Rating: Critical)

(2) MS06-005
Vulnerability in Windows Media Player Could Allow Remote Code Execution

(6) MS06-010

The Microsoft Bulletin MS06-009 is a local “Elevation of Privilege” vulnerability in the Korean Method Editor and requires an interactive logon.

The TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention Systems provide Application Protection, Performance Protection and Infrastructure Protection at Gigabit speeds through total packet inspection. Application Protection capabilities provide fast, accurate, reliable protection from internal and external cyber attacks. Through its Infrastructure Protection capabilities, the TippingPoint IPS protects VoIP infrastructure, routers, switches, DNS and other critical infrastructure from targeted attacks and traffic anomalies. TippingPoint’s Performance Protection capabilities enable customers to throttle non-mission critical applications that hijack valuable bandwidth and IT resources, thereby aligning network resources and business-critical application performance.
