Merant Unveils Dimensions Enterprise Edition: Industry’s First Comprehensive Change Management Solution for Mainframe and Distributed Platforms

 • 04 June, 2003 08:33

—Enables Organisations to Dramatically Reduce Costs, Increase Productivity by
Consolidating on a Single Change Management Framework—

SYDNEY and HILLSBORO, Ore. — 3 June 2003 — Merant (NASDAQ: MRNT; LSE: MRN), a leading provider of software and services that deliver flexible control of code, content and other business-critical assets, today introduced Dimensions Enterprise Edition, the first comprehensive enterprise change management solution capable of supporting mainframe and distributed platforms with a single, enterprise-wide repository.

Comprising Dimensions 8 and two new offerings, Dimensions for z/OS and Merant Build, Dimensions Enterprise Edition gives CIOs and IT and development managers a powerful, flexible framework for automating and controlling development processes, business rules and asset change practices across all enterprise platforms.

By capturing — within a single repository — all meta-data associated with electronic assets, processes, issues, and relationships across mainframe and distributed platforms, Dimensions Enterprise Edition offers customers unprecedented power and flexibility. Authorised users can view and manage assets, processes and issues from anywhere in the organisation, at any time, with a uniform user experience on all platforms. Not only does this reduce the need for platform-specific training and administration, but it also facilitates advanced reporting and comprehensive, real-time impact analysis of changes to products, programs and infrastructure.

“The introduction of this outstanding solution is a significant milestone for us, and the industry as a whole. This is an excellent start to our new fiscal year,” commented David Balazsy, a Director of Merant for Australia and New Zealand.

Dimensions Enterprise Edition is the only solution that delivers the scalability, broad application integration, multi-database support, and powerful management capabilities required for organisations to consolidate on a single change management framework, regardless of platform. As a result, it delivers a higher return on investment and lower cost of ownership and administration than any other solution, while helping improve the overall quality and manageability of technology initiatives. In addition, its robust process engine and ability to lock and secure assets uniquely suit it to help organisations meet regulatory or audit requirements.

Dimensions Enterprise Edition specifically addresses the needs of organisations with development projects that encompass mainframe, application and web-server components. These companies have traditionally relied on a variety of third-party and in-house developed solutions to manage asset changes across diverse environments. However, the high costs of administration and maintenance associated with point solutions, as well as the inherent issues with reporting, auditing, referencing and sharing baseline assets across disparate platforms, have proven to be problematic for these organisations.

“Until now, coordinated mainframe and client-server functionality has been weak in change management products, driving many development organisations to rely on a combination of third-party and home-grown technologies,” said Jim Duggan, vice president, research, at Gartner. “Unfortunately, this approach leaves organisations vulnerable to many problems, not the least of which is the high probability of missing or ‘unprotected’ assets.”

“The capabilities of Dimensions Enterprise Edition position us to succeed in a number of key areas, including lucrative vertical industries such as Life Sciences. Moreover, they pave the way for other intriguing applications of the technology, such as true closed-loop change management throughout the entire IT production lifecycle,” added Mr Balazsy.

Dimensions 8
Dimensions Enterprise Edition eliminates these issues by combining Dimensions 8 with Merant Build and the new Dimensions for z/OS. Dimensions is the industry’s most comprehensive change management platform. Dimensions 8, also released today, delivers an impressive array of features that enhance its overall flexibility, usability and performance, including Oracle and IBM DB2 database support, integration with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, improved client usability, enhanced administration tools, seamless integration with Merant’s industry standard process asset library, and more. NB: For more information, see separate press release at www.merant.com

Dimensions for z/OS
Dimensions for z/OS, a key component of Dimensions Enterprise Edition, replaces Merant’s previous mainframe client, and extends the full power and flexibility of Dimensions to the mainframe. Dimensions for z/OS features a number of new enhancements to ensure seamless integration and consistency with all other Dimensions platforms. Architecture improvements include the addition of a standard Dimensions listener, which replaces the Mainframe Manager and simplifies installation and configuration, as well as a standard API toolkit that supports the connection to Dimensions and the execution of commands. The API toolkit is available to applications running as native MVS and USS.

In addition, Dimensions for z/OS offers extended access capabilities, delivering access to native MVS files, such as PDS and QSAM, as well as HFS files. Item libraries and archives are stored in the HFS file system, simplifying management while retaining the ability to host libraries on Windows and UNIX platforms. The Dimensions for z/OS ISPF client also has a new user interface, including a menu-driven approach that provides a more familiar native interface, as well as a new login dialogue that simplifies the connection process. It also offers interactive navigation for selection of multiple items and new panels for most common operations. Extensible and customisable, the new ISPF client includes an online help element that completes the native interface support.

Merant Build
Dimensions Enterprise Edition also includes Merant Build, which delivers a next-generation approach for building software applications. Merant Build automates and synchronises build management activities, while providing cross-platform support for distributed and mainframe environments. Tightly integrated with Dimensions and Dimensions for z/OS, it supports all leading integrated development environments (IDEs). Builds can be initiated from the ISPF, web client or command line for local and remote support, and there are pre-configured build types for C, C++, JAVA, COBOL, PL/I, CICS and DB2. Powerful logging and reporting capabilities offer visibility into the live status of builds, and full integration with Dimensions ensures that all dependencies are captured and stored to provide superior impact analysis and reduce re-builds.
