Holmesglen Institute of TAFE Learns the Value of Fortinet’s Network Security Solution
- 28 February, 2008 16:04

Fortinet® – a pioneer and leading provider of unified threat management (UTM) solutions – today announced that Holmesglen Institute of TAFE, one of Australia’s largest providers of vocational education and training, has deployed Fortinet FortiGate™ multi-threat security appliances to help protect its distributed campus network environment.

With a distributed network of campus environments spread across the Australian states of Victoria and South Australia, Holmesglen Institute relies on a relatively small information technology team to provide support for 55,000 faculty, staff and students.

In the past, technology firewall services at Holmesglen Institute were handled by a technology outsourcing provider. This arrangement led to delays whenever security settings needed to be changed. In addition, due to the high volume of regular configuration changes needed to support the large student population, the outsourcing arrangement generated high ongoing costs. As a result, Holmesglen Institute decided to move critical security functions in-house, and look for a new network security solution that would give them more control over the network, be easy to use, and cost-effective.

After a thorough review of vendors, Holmesglen Institute selected the Fortinet FortiGate-3810 unified threat management solution.

“Fortinet has allowed us to bring our network security services in-house rather than spending money for an outsourced vendor to manage the network,” said Rosemary Burns, Technical Services Division Manager at Holmesglen Institute. “A unified security solution works best for us, as we have a relatively small technical team. The FortiGate solution helps us to manage our time, skills and on-going costs more effectively. Because of our Fortinet deployment, we are expecting to save $1.5 million in network security costs over the next three years.”

Holmesglen Institute has been able to make substantial budget savings by integrating multiple security functions into the FortiGate-3810 solution. The savings have been achieved by reducing costs associated with outsourcing agreements, savings on equipment costs and software licenses, and reduced ongoing support costs.

Centrally located at the Chadstone campus, Fortinet FortiGate-3810 appliances provide firewall, antivirus, intrusion prevention and Web content filtering protection for the entire campus network. FortiAnalyzer™ has also been deployed at the Chadstone site to provide integrated analysis and reporting. Designed to simplify and centralise the collection and analysis of log and event data from Fortinet's FortiGate security appliances, FortiAnalyzer allows Holmesglen Institute to easily deliver highly relevant network reports and valuable intelligence on network usage.
Rosemary Burns continued, “The regular automatic reports generated by FortiAnalyzer provide our executive team with valuable insight into the security risks we are dealing with on a daily basis.”
Fortinet's FortiGate systems are ASIC-accelerated security appliances that integrate essential security applications such as anti-virus, firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention, Web filtering, anti-spam and traffic shaping. All FortiGate systems are kept up to date automatically by Fortinet's FortiGuard™ Network, which helps ensure protection against the most damaging, content-based threats from email and Web traffic such as viruses, worms, intrusions, other unwanted network traffic and more - around the clock and around the world.
“Educational institutes are prime targets for viruses and worms due to the large number of students and faculty members accessing content,” said Charles Cote, Fortinet's Country Manager for ANZ. “Fortinet solutions deliver an integrated, scalable security platform that is perfectly suited to the security and performance needs of colleges, university and TAFEs.”
