Hitachi Expands Portfolio of High-Performance NAS Platforms

 • 28 November, 2007 09:00

Answering the demand for enterprise-class data protection for file services, Hitachi today announced major moves to expand the company’s portfolio of High-performance NAS Platforms. Building on the worldwide success of the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform, powered by BlueArc®, Hitachi is expanding its portfolio with two new models—the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform 2000 Nearline and the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform 2000. This expanded and enhanced portfolio brings enterprises of all sizes new advanced storage services such as data protection, replication, clustering, and virtual server capabilities—all within an integrated storage management framework.

For organisations of all sizes in vertical markets such as Oil and Gas, Life Sciences, Entertainment and Internet Services, protecting unstructured data generated from high-performance computing applications is paramount to the success of the business. Today, Hitachi is delivering an advanced portfolio of high-performance NAS solutions that deliver the highest levels of performance, scalability and data protection in the industry.

“Hitachi has a proven track record in delivering the most robust data protection, long distance replication and integrated storage management services to our enterprise customers,” said John Mansfield, senior vice president, Global Solutions Strategy and Development, Hitachi Data Systems. “With today’s announcement, we are bringing all of these advanced storage services to our expanded NAS platform portfolio enabling customers to reduce data storage costs, mitigate risks and improve productivity for their business.”

Introducing the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform 2000 Nearline

For customers requiring high-performance, yet cost effective disk-to-disk data storage for a secondary site or large data repository, the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform 2000 Nearline delivers industry-leading performance and scalability. This new platform scales up to 2 petabytes and bridges the gap for customers torn between choosing slow but low-cost tape or fast but higher-cost fiber channel storage systems. Supported by the high-capacity Serial ATA (SATA)-based Hitachi Workgroup Modular Storage system, the new High-performance NAS Platform 2000 Nearline provides customers a comprehensive set of advanced storage services that can lower overall data storage costs including tiered storage and backup. For example, customers can use the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform 2000 Nearline to replicate data from a primary site to an offsite nearline location where they can retrieve the information rapidly if needed.

Introducing the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform 2000

Breaking through the perceptions that only the largest of enterprises can afford ultra high-performance or scalable NAS solutions, Hitachi is offering a new cost-effective alternative to customers that want a flexible high performance midrange NAS platform that can scale as their business requires. The Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform 2000 offers customers a high-performance, cost effective solution that can scale up to 128TB in capacity. Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform 2000 is fully integrated with all of Hitachi’s storage systems.

Today, Hitachi is unveiling significant enhancements to its entire lineup of High-performance NAS Platforms including:

Deeper Integration with Hitachi Storage Management Software

Providing customers simplified management across all of Hitachi’s storage solutions, Hitachi is delivering deeper integration with the Hitachi HiCommand® storage management software suite. The Hitachi High-performance NAS Platforms are now integrated with Hitachi HiCommand Tiered Storage Manager and HiCommand Device Manager—enabling organisations to combine the advanced file-based virtualisation framework with the industry-leading block-based virtualisation framework provided by the Hitachi Universal Storage Platform™ V series.

Enhanced Storage and Clustering Scalability

Hitachi High-performance NAS Platforms will now support the new 64-bit SCSI addressing changes that allow for larger LUN support for up to 64 terabytes. Additionally, the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform now delivers a four fold increase in overall usable system capacity—further extending the company’s lead over the competition. The new clusters will scale up to eight nodes, providing 2 petabytes of capacity per node or per cluster.

New Data Protection and Replication Services

Extending the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platforms data protection and backup capabilities, the Hitachi High-performance NAS Platforms now support synchronous replication with Hitachi TrueCopy® software and local clone support with Hitachi ShadowImage® Heterogeneous Replication software.

Taking business continuity to a new level and providing more choice for customers Hitachi has partnered with Ciena® Corporation to deliver a MetroCluster long-distance replication solution. The Hitachi High-performance NAS Platforms offer an active-active GeoCluster up to 100 kilometers in distance. This breaks down traditional geographic limitations of active-active replication solutions and provides customers with the flexibility, control and redundancy to meet their most stringent business continuity requirements.

New Virtual Server Security Services

For customers that converge multiple networks, users, and departmental requirements on the same Hitachi High-performance NAS Platform, Hitachi now delivers new software that extends enhanced security capabilities to Virtual Servers. The software provides multi-domain support across all Enterprise Virtual Servers, up to a total of 64 virtual servers per entity—allowing resources to be securely isolated and provisioned safely. The software also provides isolated name space support for each Secured Virtual Server.
