• 04 March, 2004 12:00

Automatic Workflow, Incremental Deployment and Broad Platform Support Ensure Merant Collage’s Continued Appeal to Organisations Across the Globe

Melbourne and Hillsboro, Ore. — 4 March 2004 — Merant (NASDAQ: MRNT; LSE: MRN), a global provider of closed-loop change management solutions that deliver control, insight and predictability across software development, web content, and IT infrastructure, today announced a new version of its web content management (WCM) solution, Merant Collage.

Merant Collage 4.5 features automatic workflow generation, incremental content deployment, and broader support for Web Services and popular industry platforms, including Windows Server 2003 and AIX operating system.

Merant Collage quickly adapts to existing infrastructure, giving organisations secure, process-driven control over web content, including existing Internet, intranet and extranet sites, within hours of implementation. Authorised users can easily directly contribute and update web site content, while ensuring adherence to corporate style, and decreasing demands on IT staff. A fraction of the cost of other solutions, Merant Collage supports a wide variety of IT environments including .NET and J2EE.

Gene Alvarez, vice president at META Group noted, “With many companies standardising on Java appservers, it’s interesting to note that there are so few cost-effective Java solutions available. We are even seeing large enterprises looking for more affordable WCM solutions that can easily adapt to existing infrastructure. Vendors who address this need show a firm understanding of the market.”

Broad Platform Support
Merant Collage’s support for a wide range of platforms and operating systems enables it to rapidly adapt to — and complement — existing IT infrastructure. In addition to support for Linux, Solaris, Windows 2000 and Windows XP, Merant Collage now supports Windows Server 2003 and the AIX operating system. Moreover, Merant Collage 4.5 includes an extensive API exposed via Web Services, making it easier than ever to integrate Merant Collage with other applications. Using Web Services, developers can interface with Collage using either Java or Microsoft .NET based programming languages.

“Merant Collage is based on the premise that organisations already have functional web sites in place and have invested significant resources to support them. The challenge these organisations face is efficiently managing change to these web sites without making fundamental changes to infrastructure and processes. Merant Collage can rapidly import existing web site content and provide scalable control of web sites within hours of implementation,” said David Balazsy, Managing Director of Merant in Australia.

Automatic Workflow
Merant Collage 4.5 makes it easier than ever for authorised users to directly add content to web sites, eliminating bottlenecks that arise when one centralised group is responsible for posting and deployment of all web content. Using Merant Collage Automatic Workflow, users can author content from within common desktop applications, such as Microsoft Office, and then save it to Merant Collage where it is automatically routed through appropriate workflow processes. This preserves creative freedom for contributors, while ensuring quality control and adherence to corporate style.

Incremental Deployment
Merant Collage 4.5 also includes “incremental deploy,” a new capability which enables organisations to intelligently deploy complex web sites. The product swiftly analyses any new changes to content and calculates precisely what needs to be deployed to the production server so that very large web sites can be rapidly and easily deployed on a regular basis.

“Our organisation manages large amounts of ever-changing content across multiple websites,” said Mickey Hawk, web and e-marketing product manager at OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. “Merant Collage’s new incremental deployment capability will enable us to deploy only new material to these sites, allowing us to publish new content much more rapidly and with fewer resources.”

Availability
Merant Collage 4.5 will be available in April 2004. Pricing starts at A$50,000 for 10 concurrent licences.
