IT Leaders from QR Limited and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation receive 2007 Visionary Awards

AUSTRALIA, Sydney – Sept. 12, 2007 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the 2007 Visionary Award winners for Australia and New Zealand. These IT leaders are recognised for their innovative use of Symantec solutions to protect their infrastructure and information.

From securing the infrastructure of one of Australia’s state rail networks to furthering the national defence and security of Australia, the 2007 Visionary Award winners are leveraging technology to drive true business results. The winners of the 2007 Visionary Awards include IT leaders from QR Limited and the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO).

David Sykes, vice president, Symantec Pacific, said, “Congratulations to these innovators who have used technology to realise tangible business benefits for their organisations. Today’s IT challenges are all about reducing complexity, increasing IT efficiency and minimising IT risk and this year’s Visionary Award winners have demonstrated their success leveraging Symantec technology and are a great example to us all.”

QR reduces IT risk, lowers cost and complexity, and meets compliance requirements

Dallas Stower, chief information officer for QR, Queensland’s statewide train network, is recognised for leadership and innovation in helping make QR’s vision of high performance a reality.

The challenge of managing IT systems that support 1,000 daily train services transporting 600,000 tonnes of freight and carrying 160,000 passengers, is one Stower embraces. His team worked with Symantec to deploy three solutions to reduce IT risk, lower cost and complexity, and ensure compliance with all necessary regulations.

Stower and his team used Symantec Enterprise Vault and ArchiveBridge for integrated email and SAP archiving and e-discovery, reducing email and SAP-stored data, and improving employee efficiency while at the same time, complying with the Australia Public Records Act. Stower and his team deployed Veritas Storage Foundation to increase system availability and performance, and CommandCentral Storage to improve the health monitoring, tracking, and reporting of the SAN infrastructure.

QR is currently using Symantec Security Information Manager to integrate IT incident management and reporting across the heterogeneous environment, which will result in an expected 75 percent reduction in the time taken to locate IT incidents.

The Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation furthers the national defence and security of Australia.

The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) is part of Australia's Department of Defence and is the Australian Government's lead agency charged with applying science and technology to protect and defend Australia and its national interests.

Paul Zanelli, national manager science corporate information systems for DSTO, recognised the need to identify and implement a series of solutions that would protect and store vital information within the organisation. The protection and efficient storage management of terabytes of valuable data is a mission-critical enterprise for DSTO and particularly with increasing levels of vital research information residing in email, DSTO needed to archive and provide rapid e-discovery of email.

To build this solution, the DSTO began by standardising backup and restoring operations on Veritas NetBackup, which reduced backup times by 30 percent, dramatically improved backup success rates, and cut the time needed to manage backups and restores.

In order to retain critical information contained in email and then perform e-discovery on the email archive, Zanelli and his team leveraged Symantec Enterprise Vault which will reduce storage and management costs of the email system.

In addition, seeking a transparent view into their heterogeneous storage environment, Zanelli and his team rolled out Veritas CommandCentral Storage. The storage management solution provides the DSTO with a consolidated view across each of their storage environments, greatly improving storage utilisation rates and IT staff productivity.
