Flight Centre expansion underpinned by new Hitachi Data Systems storage solution

 • 29 April, 2004 09:33

Sydney, AUSTRALIA – April 29, 2004 – Hitachi Data Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), has completed a two phase project for Flight Centre to completely re-design their storage infrastructure to underpin Flight Centre’s business growth over the next five years.

Hitachi Data Systems combined with partners - Cisco Systems, Quantum and CommVault - to deliver a complete storage solution that would improve overall responsiveness, minimise risk and at the same time, provide for Flight Centre’s growth potential.

Mr. Michael Cremen, General Manager of Hitachi Data Systems Australia said, “The ability to offer a bullet-proof solution that is extremely scalable was a key determinant for us. Flight Centre is adding a new retail outlet somewhere in the world every 20 working hours, and they don’t expect this rate of growth to change in the near future. I am pleased that Flight Centre has recognised us as one of their strategic business partners when it comes to Information Technology."

Mr. Geoff Tyerman, Flight Centre’s Technical Services Manager said, “This contract was awarded on three main criteria: the ability to understand our business goals and to work with us to meet them; the ability to provide a tightly integrated complete solution for our AIX, Windows and RedHat environments; and a demonstrated ability to professionally deliver high levels of customer service. Hitachi Data Systems won on all three measurements.”

Flight Centre took a recovery centric approach to their backup, implementing the Hitachi Thunder 9500V and CommVault Galaxy Backup & Recovery Software. The integrated Hitachi/CommVault solution allowed Flight Centre to recover deleted files in minutes instead of hours, improving productivity across the enterprise.

For their storage network, Flight Centre wanted a single vendor strategy allowing them to leverage their existing skill sets. Working with Hitachi Data Systems, Flight Centre selected the Cisco Systems MDS 9509 Fibre Channel Director, resulting in a significant reduction in storage management overheads. Flight Centre was Cisco’s first customer to use its exclusive VSAN technology in Australia.

Flight Centre also used the project as an opportunity to review their disaster recovery strategy. It decided to synchronously replicate business critical data, using Hitachi TrueCopy, to Hitachi Data Systems' purpose built data centre in Windsor, Queensland. The Windsor data centre is a fault tolerant infrastructure offering component redundancy. It is connected to Flight Centre’s office located in the Brisbane CBD via Dark Fibre where the second Thunder 9500V is co-hosted. This provides an uninterrupted service to business critical applications managed remotely by Hitachi HiCommand software.

“This is Flight Centre’s single largest IT purchase. We required a partner that could help our IT department meet our company’s business goals. Hitachi Data Systems has done just that and we are pleased to have them on board,” commented Mr Tyerman.

Flight Centre is Australia’s largest travel retailer with over 3,000 Australian staff and a further 3,500 employees in the US, Canada, South Africa, the UK and New Zealand.
