BearingPoint and Mercury Partner to Create the ART of SAP Upgrades

 • 01 June, 2004 11:58

BearingPoint (NYSE:BE), one of the world’s largest business and systems integration firms, and Mercury Interactive (NASDAQ:MERC) the global leader in Business Technology Optimization, have developed a solution for those bothersome SAP patches and upgrades that too often sit on the shelf gathering dust.

Working closely with Mercury technology, Bearing Point has developed ART, an Automated Regression Testing methodology that ensures the implementation of notes and patches released monthly by SAP do not impact the live system’s users or business.

Any organisation that enjoys the benefits of an SAP system also knows that each month SAP releases a range of notes and patches to fix obscure problems and improve functions – in addition to the major version upgrades that are released on a regular basis.

The challenge is not in applying the new code – usually carried out overnight by a technician – but in ensuring that the changes have not impacted on the live system. The possible consequence of getting it wrong and negatively impacting the business leads many organisations to delay or disregard implementing these upgrades. To do so places at risk their return on investment from SAP.

Meta Group concurs, both with the reward and the risk. “Without upgrading, organisations are unable to take advantage of enhanced functions, modules, technology and business process support available from SAP," said Michael Barnes, Vice President of Technology Services at META Group. "However, because of the high complexity of ERP packages and the need to account for custom or heavily customised code, an intensive testing phase is required. Most time miscalculations are done during this phase."

BearingPoint SAP lead, Gideon Lupton explained that when installing an upgrade it is also necessary for organisations to check for unexpected downstream effects either in the way their SAP system behaves with their interfaces to other parts of the IT environment or changes for the users.

“And the only way to do it properly is to test everything before it goes live – through time-consuming, repetitive regression testing. It is nearly always a manual process going through hard copy test scenarios.

“At least 90 percent of the business process scenarios don’t change but they still have to be reviewed and run. It is very repetitive, boring work,” says Lupton.

Now there is a better way. By combining Mercury’s SAP certified automated testing tools and BearingPoint’s deep experience in SAP upgrades and regression testing, the job becomes straightforward and easy.

Mercury Australia’s Director of Alliances, Richard Outten, observes that the upgrade issue has been around for a long time.

“Until now, keeping up with the SAP updates has been too hard for most organisations. The SAP updates build up on the shelves, untouched, until the day the organisation realises its multi-million dollar SAP investment has become an unmaintainable legacy system,” Richard Outten said.

The benefits of using ART to stay on top of the SAP upgrades are obvious. Quality improves and costs go down. It becomes more economical to apply SAP releases regularly and maintain them instead of waiting until something goes wrong.

The ART solution will be demonstrated at the Sapphire Conference in Brisbane 1 – 4 June 2004 at the joint BearingPoint and Mercury stand. A comprehensive white paper about ART will be released shortly after the conference.
