Leading Australian Business School Awards Network Appliance and Secure Data Group New Storage Contract

Melbourne Business SchooI deploys NetApp FAS250 unified storage system based on scalability, data consolidation, price-performance
and superior long-term ROI

Network Appliance, Inc., a leading provider of enterprise network storage solutions, today announced that Melbourne Business School (MBS) has deployed a NetApp® FAS250 unified storage system to consolidate its many data sources into a highly available and reliable environment ensuring intellectual property and confidential student information remains secure. The NetApp FAS250 system offered the School enhanced efficiency and the best return on investment (ROI).

MBS was founded jointly by The University of Melbourne and Australian business. The School offered its first MBA curriculum in 1963 and is recognized by the Australian Government as a National Management School. MBS is regularly ranked as a leading provider of management education in the Asia Pacific region by international agencies.

Phillip Simone, MBS Information Technology Director, said the FAS250 was deployed with the objective of, “Consolidating many different types of data in a secure, robust and available environment. In addition, we are currently in the process of merging with the Mt Eliza Business School to become Australia’s largest such institution and so scalability and our confidence in being able to share our data storage across remote sites were two further important considerations.”

MBS acquired its NetApp FAS250 though Network Appliance reseller Secure Data Group (SDG) and the system will be accessed by some 2,000 students and staff when the merger of the two schools is complete.

The system has a 2 terabyte capacity and is configured with iSCSI connection for flexibility; SnapMirrror® software to enable data to be replicated on an hourly basis; and NetApp SnapManager® software for the hosting and automatic backup and restore of Microsoft Exchange data.

The School had previously engaged SDG to help manage other, non-storage, implementations and Phillip Simone says, “As a partner, they give us access to extensive resources and high quality technical staff to supplement our own talented but small internal IT team”.

The newly installed FAS250 replaces a mainly DAS (direct-attached storage) environment and was selected after what Mr Simone said was, “A very diligent and rigorous tendering process. The challenge was to provide enterprise functionality but on a much smaller budget than large corporations enjoy.”

He added, “The ROI of the NetApp solution was evident. No other vendor could give us the same level of functionality and come close to the price. We modelled the return on investment over three, four and five years to give us clear picture of the ‘real costs’ and the FAS250 won on all counts.”

Simon Green, Network Appliance Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand said, “This was a gratifying win for our company. The already high profile and prestige of the Melbourne Business School will be enhanced even further through its merger with the Mt Eliza institution and we are naturally very pleased to have been able to assist with their data consolidation needs.”
