Vroom leads the trend to comparison shopping sites

 • 29 November, 2006 09:48

Comparison shopper web sites represent the latest online marketing trend, superseding affiliate micro-sites which customers found difficult to use.

The appeal of comparison shopper sites like www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au lies in their ability to tie securely into the suppliers' inventory combined with convenience. Such sites save online shoppers time and money while providing suppliers with an alternative distribution channel.

Vroom Vroom Vroom CEO Peter Thornton says: "Our own comparison shopper site offers real money savings to the customers and, at the same time, allows major car hire companies to forgo the old, tedious affiliate microsites which were cumbersome to the online punter. XML allows our comparison site to make bookings, modifications and cancellations directly into the reservation systems of big names like Hertz, Avis and Budget, securely and safely."

But why ever would you call your website www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au?

For excellent marketing reasons, according to Thornton, "Mr Vroom Vroom Vroom" himself. His opinion is vindicated because the brash branded www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au happens to be a very successful online car hire shopper, whose bookings have tripled during 2006.

The website takes the customer's travel dates and times and retrieves all last-minute "best rate of the day" prices for all major car hire suppliers like Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty, presenting a list of choices in price ascending order. This gives the online customers a direct choice of supplier and a side-by-side comparison between prices for each car group.

Vroom deals only with cars and is able to guarantee the best web-based pricing from these leading car rental suppliers. With over 1,000 locations in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, France, Spain and the USA, Vroom continues to expand worldwide.

But why the name Vroom Vroom Vroom?

Peter Thornton explains: " Vroom Vroom Vroom is brash branded for two important reasons: suppliers remember us and customers remember us. It is very easy to go to Google, search for 'Brisbane Airport Car Hire' and get a list of generic URLs: car-hires.com.au, airport-cars.com.au, carhire.com.au, etc. You might end up using one of these sites but six months down the line when it comes time to remembering where you booked, a car, you won't remember it. Vroom Vroom Vroom avoids that problem. Everybody can remember Vroom."

He says the portal comes up nicely in natural search results. The company has invested time and money on Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and, although this takes patience, it has paid off handsomely.

"The key to SEO is to come up in the first half of the first page of search results for key phrases and we have met this objective. When we do come up in the search results, our long, strange URL actually catches the eye (because of all of the 'oo's). That's a nice little side benefit to what I originally thought was an overly large URL".

Thornton says Vroom saves time and money for customers because of the way it works. Vroom retrieves car hire rates directly from the reservation systems of the global suppliers, all of which are tied into yield management systems. This means that if Hertz has too many cars at Sydney Airport, they may lower their prices temporarily to clear the inventory. Prices fluctuate minute-to-minute for each supplier, so a good deal is potentially just around the corner for each customer. Customers going directly to each car hire firm would have to plug in personal travel info each time and collate the results. By the time he or she had done this for Hertz, an inventory special at Avis might have come and gone.

Thornton adds that Vroom is exceptionally easy to use. He says: "We have the easiest booking system on the planet, and our customers support this view. People like using our site because they don't have too many screens to fill in or boxes to tick. Most people want convenience when booking a car. That's what we continue to strive for."
