Strathfield Group Limited Migrates Critical Applications to Oracle on Linux on Dell[TM] for 20 Per Cent of Unix Cost

<p>STRATHFIELD GROUP LIMITED MIGRATES MISSION CRITICAL APPLICATIONS TO ORACLE ON LINUX ON DELL[TM] FOR 20 PER CENT OF UNIX COST</p>
<p>- Strathfield Group Saves One Million Dollars with Oracle on Dell on Linux Implementation -</p>
<p>SYDNEY - December 9, 2003 - Strathfield Group Limited (“Strathfield”) has chosen Dell PowerEdge[TM] servers running Red Hat Linux for its implementation of Oracle9i Real Application Clusters. The new solution was implemented at approximately 20 per cent of the cost of a UNIX alternative, saving Strathfield close to one million dollars.</p>
<p>Strathfield opened its first store in Sydney in October 1980 and has grown to become one of Australia's leading specialty retailers with over 90 stores and nearly 1,000 employees nationally. Over 22,000 stock keeping units and stores geographically spread across every metro and regional centre in Australia, meant the business was in need of a complete mission critical technology refresh to manage and support its expanding business needs.</p>
<p>“Our entire infrastructure was without redundancy and single-point-sensitive, and applications with poor performance levels were costly and inhibiting productivity,” said Steve Walker, MIS Manager, Strathfield.</p>
<p>Accessing business critical information had previously been laborious and cost intensive and Strathfield needed an environment that could support future technologies such as a re-engineered point of sale (POS) system and enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications. Walker was also keen to consolidate his IT and make the transition from being a small company dealing with numerous suppliers, to becoming a strategic and significant partner of carefully selected tier one vendors.</p>
<p>“After mixed success on Windows[R], we were looking for high performance and availability, higher throughput and a greater ability to data mine, ” said Walker.</p>
<p>According to Walker, Dell was a long-term PC supplier to the Strathfield Group and had recently won all Strathfield’s desktop business based on great price and its custom imaging solution. However, he was ‘pretty hostile’ when Dell initially raised the prospect of managing the data centre refresh.</p>
<p>“I had all but decided on UNIX, but when Dell engaged Oracle and demonstrated true fault tolerance in a Red Hat Linux environment - for about one fifth of the price - they certainly got my attention!” said Walker.</p>
<p>The new solution involved upgrading and migrating to the Oracle9i Database with Real Application Clusters on Linux. This runs on a cluster of Dell PowerEdge[TM] 6650 servers, Dell PowerConnect[TM] switches and is backed by a Dell | EMC SAN FC4700-2 and Dell PowerVault[TM] 136T storage solution. Oracle technology included Oracle Database and Oracle Application Server.</p>
<p>Walker selected 4U Intel Xeon PowerEdge 6650s for their high performance delivery, system availability and configuration flexibility. This makes them ideal for supporting business critical workloads such as online transaction processing, email and web serving, and ERP.</p>
<p>Both David Miller, Managing Director of Dell Australia and New Zealand and Brian Mitchell, Managing Director of Oracle Australia and New Zealand, agree that the real benefits for Dell | Oracle customers lie in the seamless partner integration and the standards based, ‘scale-as-you-grow’ approach to enterprise computing.</p>
<p>“The customer has one goal in mind, and that is to drive better efficiency in their organisation, at lower operational costs, so they can invest more in strategic technologies that drive advantage over competitors,” said Miller. “Oracle on Dell is fast becoming a standard in the data centre and now, with a proven and reliable Linux offering, customers are finding it easier to purchase, deploy, and get greater value from their database and applications than they ever have in the past.”</p>
<p>Strathfield’s solution deployment started in February 2003 with the expertise of Oracle Consulting and Dell partner integrator Enstore. Final sign-off on the last details of the project was completed at the end of October.</p>
<p>According to Walker, the Dell | Oracle engagement, from pre-sales through to implementation, provided a far greater level of comfort than any alternative. It offered a single point of accountability and best of breed fault resolutions from leading vendors in their respective areas. This was a level of service not previously affordable or accessible to mid-sized companies.</p>
<p>In making his decision, Walker developed a business case that displayed significant benefits in just six months - a metric he is confident he will attain. “With an investment equivalent to one fifth of the alternative, the ROI was evident straight away - we just couldn’t lose money!” exclaimed Walker.</p>
<p>“Just one of the compliments I have received since the implementation came from a finance executive who experienced an 82 per cent reduction in processing time for a regular financial management report. This is one small area where the Dell | Oracle | Red Hat solution easily translates into real savings for Strathfield,” said Walker.</p>
