Computrace deters laptop theft from Vic schools’ pupils
- 22 August, 2006 13:39

Parents’ fears that their Year 9 children’s new laptop computers would be lost or stolen, have been eased by a security package that includes insurance, an asset tag, and a three-year cover with Computrace security and tracking software.

The parents of pupils at four Melbourne schools were enthusiastic when asked to contribute towards educational laptops for their children – but expressed concerns about the machines’ safekeeping. So the schools selected laptops that came with a strong security package.

ComputracePlus tracks where laptops are and who is using them, and provides detailed reports for every computer with an Internet connection. Laptops can be tracked as they change hands or move around an organisation, so ComputracePlus reduces theft problems dramatically, and deters would-be thieves. It also helps to recover lost or stolen computers.

The scheme to enhance the students’ learning process through the use of laptops was initiated by Michael Phillips, Principal of Ringwood Secondary College. The other schools involved are: Maroondah Secondary College, Norwood Secondary College and Parkwood Secondary College.

The Victorian Department of Education provided a subsidy of $300 per laptop and parents agreed to contribute $1 a day for three years. Upon graduation, participating students have the option to purchase or return their laptops.

The chosen solution meets the needs of students, parents and administrators, with a combination of notebooks, ComputracePlus asset tracking and protection, and Dell’s free OpenManage Systems Management, which enables administrators to monitor, deploy and update a fleet of laptops remotely.

The laptop initiative begun by Michael Phillips has become a benchmark program, examining both student productivity increases as well as innovative funding methods for the Victorian Department of Education.
