Bathurst Regional Council Strikes Gold with Mitel IP Telephony

<p>Mitel, the trusted provider of IP communications solutions, today announced that Bathurst Regional Council has successfully deployed a metropolitan area IP Telephony network using the Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform (ICP) solution.</p>
<p>Bathurst Regional Council services a community of over 37,000 residents in and around the city of Bathurst in Central West NSW. Bathurst is located two and half hours west of Sydney on the Macquarie River, and is Australia’s oldest inland settlement.</p>
<p>The Council employs over 400 staff and provides a full range of facilities and services to its community, including planning, tourism, parks and recreation, water, waste management and roads.</p>
<p>With 15 buildings linked together by a city wide Internet Protocol (IP) metropolitan area network, Bathurst Regional Council relies heavily on information technology to deliver services to the community.</p>
<p>Peter Fawkes, Manager of Information Services for Bathurst Regional Council commented, “Our team delivers services to the local community around the clock, so we need a telephone system that never misses a beat. We handle hundreds of community requests every day, so efficiency and reliability are critical. Our previous phone system was built from a patchwork of different suppliers over many years. Administering the system and providing user support was complicated.”</p>
<p>To allow growth and improve the efficiency of handling customer requests, Bathurst Regional Council decided to undertake a gradual migration to a Mitel IP based telephony solution. With a metropolitan high speed IP data network already in place linking all of their major sites, converting voice services to IP also allowed Bathurst Regional Council to both lower call costs, and more efficiently use their existing IP network.</p>
<p>Ethan Group, a Mitel accredited Platinum Solution Provider, was chosen to design the IP based telephone system, design and implement a new power over Ethernet network, as well as handle the migration and ongoing support of the new system.</p>
<p>Peter Fawkes continued, “Ethan Group has helped us enormously during the planning for our phone system upgrades, and their consultants have been key team members for our migration to Mitel’s IP telephony solution. Their excellent ongoing remote support of our systems has allowed our IT team to make better use of limited resources.”</p>
<p>Bathurst Regional Council has implemented two Mitel 3300 ICP systems in a resilient configuration in the main Civic centre, which houses the core administrative functions of the organisation. The Library and Mount Panorama Pit Complex also currently have dedicated Mitel 3300 ICP systems in place. Over the next two years, all 15 Council managed sites are expected to progressively migrate to a seamless IP telephony solution.</p>
<p>In addition to reducing call costs and simplifying growth, the move to a Mitel solution has dramatically simplified the administration practices within the IT department. Administration of the Mitel 3300 ICP systems is completely web based, with integrated automatic reporting tools.</p>
<p>Mr Fawkes commented, “Our previous phone system was difficult to manage. We administered our entire system from a single dedicated phone handset with a tiny 4 line LCD text display. Every time someone moved desk, we needed to make physical changes to cabling. Our new Mitel IP telephony system has web based management, and can be managed from any computer. Mitel’s IP telephony solution is extremely easy to use, which means that any member of our IT department can now easily manage the phone system. ”</p>
