PC Market Bucks Historic Trends and Experiences Massive Growth, Says IDC

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, August 11th 2005 - IDC has recently released the preliminary results for the combined Australia (Desktop and Notebook) market for 2Q 2005. The results show the Australian PC market increasing by 14% sequentially and by 22% from the same period in 2004.</p>
<p>The second quarter of 2Q 2005 was quite simply one of the most interesting periods in the history of the Australian PC market. The combination of tenders in the government and education sectors along with unseasonably strong demand in the consumer market caused a massive swelling in growth. Additionally, the second quarter saw the introduction of the first ever sub $1,000 notebook PC in Australia.</p>
<p>"More than ever IDC found that price aggression was a major feature during the quarter. This has created a great diaspora of pricing levels for notebook vendors and shows vendors are beginning to define their roles in the market," said Michael Sager, IDC Senior Analyst for PC Hardware.</p>
<p>IDC's Sager also noted that, "The rankings for 2Q 2005 remain relatively unchanged but there were major movements in market share. HP had a stellar quarter, remaining in the top spot, and growing to have over 19% of the total market in 2Q. Dell also grew its share in second position to finish with 14.5% share, having particular strength in the government sector. Third place Acer had a phenomenal quarter, largely on the back of its success in the commercial and consumer markets, finishing with 12.6% share of the overall market. Lenovo remained in fourth place and had a strong performance to garner 7% of the total market, having a particularly strong result in desktop sales."</p>
<p>"Toshiba had a very robust performance in the second quarter and grew its presence in the notebook market, finishing with 5.4% of the total market. Rounding out the top 7 were Apple and Optima who both had success in the consumer and education markets. All in all, the vast majority of the market experienced growth with minor exceptions such as Samsung and the whitebook market", commented Mr. Sager.</p>
