Local Developer Dumps SQL Server for InterSystems CACHE

SYDNEY, 27 July, 2004 -- InterSystems, the leading provider of post-relational database systems, today announced that Adelaide software developer Surity Pty Ltd will discontinue its use of Microsoft's SQL Server relational database in favour of InterSystems' CACHÉ.

Surity is a privately-held company based in Adelaide and specialises in image and document management systems for pathology and radiology facilities. The company's clients include Mayne Health, Sonic Healthcare and Gribbles, who rely on Surity's Image ProFile software to process the many images and text-based documents required to manage high volumes of samples and tests.

The company's products were based on Microsoft SQL Server, largely because its low price made it attractive to Surity's customers. But for Surity, SQL Server's relational structure posed limitations, slowing the development of new features and products.

"Healthcare is a fast-paced industry and we need to upgrade our products to retain our edge," said Scott Thomas, Surity's Managing Director. "CACHÉ's built-in rapid application development environment and native object oriented, Web services and Internet services support let us deliver new features faster.

"The major advantage of CACHÉ is the way the database operates," he said. "It combines an object database with high-performance SQL, and our design concepts and philosophies lend themselves to objects rather than flat 2-D relational models. With SQL Server, we had to squeeze an object-oriented model into a relational one. With CACHÉ, we can simplify our model which reduces the complexity of development projects, gives us more flexibility, and speeds our time to market."

PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENTS
"We have moved Image ProFile onto a CACHÉ database," Thomas said. "The basic code hasn't changed that much but we can take advantage of CACHÉ's features to significantly enhance the product. The ability to offer Web services and Internet services more easily means we can cut our development time for the next version in half -- from one year down to six months."

Working with CACHÉ has also enhanced the performance of Surity's developers. "We are confident we are faster now that we work with CACHÉ," Thomas said. "We can develop more business rules internally in the database and can quickly deploy in multiple spoken languages for consumption in different markets. For a company like ours that is focused on export opportunities, that linguistic ability plus the ability to deploy on UNIX, Windows and Linux makes a lot of sense."

FASTER TIME TO MARKET
With plans to bring new products to market, this enhanced productivity is critical to Surity's business.

"Rapid application development is really important to us in the development of our new product ProjectPilot," Thomas said. "Our vision for that product is quite extensive and we had a 3-5 year product roadmap to develop all the features. We expect to get that down to 2 years if not less by working with CACHÉ.

"The potential market for ProjectPilot is huge. There is a gap in the market at the moment, but we have a finite opportunity. If we take 5 years to develop it we would have blown the opportunity. CACHÉ's rapid application development capability could be the difference between being successful and not being successful."

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
Surity's customers also applaud the move to CACHÉ, Thomas said, as it offers superior performance levels and can often be run alongside existing UNIX applications without the need for an additional investment in hardware.

"Our pathology customers require sub-1-sec response times and so the battle is always to get better performance," said Thomas. "We were confident of achieving better performance with CACHÉ." SQL Server's lack of UNIX support was a negative, as UNIX is common in the healthcare industry and Surity's clients were confronted by the need to create an unwelcome "Windows island" in order to operate its products.

The database itself is also easier to maintain, which translates into lower cost of ownership for Surity and its customers.

"With SQL Server, we typically get calls from untrained personnel at each site," Thomas said. "CACHÉ is easier to administer, it does a lot of things itself and you don't need a full-time administrator. That translates into fewer support calls to us, which customers love, and means we can devote even more resources to the application development effort which grows our business."

IMPRESSIVE PARTNER POWER
Another of Surity' reasons for adopting CACHÉ was InterSystems' partner program.
"We wanted a vendor we could work closely with in a partnership and InterSystems would do that," said Thomas. "We spoke to existing InterSystems partners, tested the waters and ran a number of small projects. We continue to be impressed with the focus that InterSystems puts on the success of its partners."

"At InterSystems, we've built our business on successful partnerships with innovative application developers," said Denis Tebbutt, Managing Director for InterSystems in Australia. "Surity's decision to work with us says as much about our partner program as it does our database technology."
