Canon unveils platform for next generation of information solutions

Canon announces the first developers, products and customers for MEAP,

a new imaging solutions platform with no direct competitors

Sydney, 28 April 2005 -- Canon Australia today unveiled MEAP (Multifunctional Embedded Application Platform), a platform for creating information and imaging solutions that previously would not have been possible.

As part of the announcement, Canon Australia:

# Reveals that Ernst & Young is the first local organisation to commission its own MEAP solution

# Launches the first two off-the-shelf software solutions that run on MEAP

# Showcases growing developer support for MEAP in Australia and around the world

MEAP allows Canon, its customers, and integrators and developers to simplify how organisations work by creating solutions that fundamentally change the behaviour of multifunctional devices (MFDs). For example, Ernst & Young employees now use their building access cards to identify themselves whenever they collect their printing, which is often client-confidential. And with eCopy for MEAP, the MFD can scan paper documents, convert them to text, encrypt and compress the originals, and automatically send the lot to a database or any other application.

“At Canon, innovation is like breathing. Harnessing innovation for the benefit of our customers is why we get up in the morning” said Mark Deere-Jones, Senior General Manager, Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon Australia. “With MEAP, Canon and our partners and customers can build enterprise information solutions that recently would have been pipe-dreams, and this is exactly what is starting to happen across Australia and around the world.”

Canon has been quietly adding MEAP capability to its MFDs for 18 months, creating a huge and rapidly growing market for every integrator or developer that is ready to embrace the new platform. In Australia, Canon has already issued its first MEAP Software Development Kit (SDK) licences, and the company is working with several other local developers to determine how MEAP can meet their needs.

“At BEAR Solutions, our reputation is based on our ability to offer simple, elegant, and cost-effective ‘user-pays’ and cost-disbursement solutions for schools, libraries, universities, businesses and corporates of all sizes,” said Jason Clifton, National Sales Manager, BEAR Solutions. “So when Canon showed us MEAP, it was immediately obvious that we should investigate how we could use it to allow the MFD itself to charge and track users directly for printing, faxing, copying or scanning.”

The following MEAP media releases were also issued today:

# “Australian-made solution brings security to printed documents” (Ernst & Young)

# “SMEs to slash print costs with unique monitoring solution” (NetSpot Accountant for MEAP)

# “Radical workflow solution to untangle the flow of business documents” (eCopy for MEAP)

Technical summary:

# MEAP is based on Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME)

# Developers use the MEAP SDK and a Java development environment to create MEAP solutions

# 20 applications can be installed on a MEAP-enabled device, nine of which may have user interface content

# MEAP solutions can interact with users via the MFD’s touch-screen panel, its keyboard and its internal web server

# MEAP solutions can interact with add-on devices such as proximity card readers via USB

# Canon has released the following MEAP-enabled devices to date in its imageRUNNER range: iR2220i, iR3320i, iR5020i, iR6020i, iR5020, iR6020, iRC3220, iRC2620, iR4570, iR3570, iR2870, iR2270, iR105+, iR9070, iR8070
