Acterna Introduces Portable Tester for Voice, Data and Video Services Over Next Generation SONET/SDH Networks in Asia Pacific -- ONT-506 shortens development time, provides realistic network load simulation from the desktop and in the field

Hong Kong and Hanoi, Vietnam: Wednesday, April 27 2005 -- Acterna, the leader in test and management solutions for consumer and business broadband communications, today unveiled the Acterna ONT-506, a portable multi-port, multi-technology and multi-channel solution that enables carriers to test for efficient and reliable handling of voice, data and video traffic over SONET/SDH networks. The ONT-506 enables testing under realistic load conditions from the desktop or in the field via one compact chassis. Its scalable and future-proof capabilities are being showcased at the Acterna seminar ‘Perfecting Communications - Next Generation SDH Networks’ in Hanoi, Vietnam today.

Next generation SONET/SDH devices are highly integrated platforms and provide very high port density and port counts as well as the ability to support multiple SONET/SDH rings. These devices are much more complex than legacy SONET/SDH equipment and create new challenges for the design of appropriate test procedures. In addition, next generation devices integrate new technologies like LAN interfaces and services like Ethernet private leased lines.

The ONT-506 helps address these challenges by bringing increased flexibility and versatility to the Acterna ONT family of optical network testers, which includes the portable four-port ONT-50 and the 12-port rack-mountable ONT-512. With the ONT-506, design, verification, integration and production test engineers of multi-service provisioning platforms (MSPPs), cross connects, ADMs and Next Generation (NextGen) network elements have the ability to measure the performance of thousands of channels simultaneously, minimizing the performance risk associated with relying on a single test channel. The ONT-506 supports a wide variety of test applications and technologies, including SONET/SDH, G.709 FEC, VCAT/LCAS/GFP, Ethernet, PoS, jitter, wander and OSA. For users of the multi-channel option, the ONT-506 enables testing and verification of next generation SONET/SDH devices by measuring the performance of thousands of channels simultaneously, minimizing the performance risk associated with relying on a single test channel.

With its 15-inch color touch screen display and multi-user capability, the ONT-506 also addresses the challenges of testing next generation SONET/SDH grooming and switching performance, and its multiple ports allow users to load/analyze line interfaces simultaneously. This elevated coverage helps achieve higher-quality results, as potential line card dependencies are identified. The ONT-506’s multi-port operation allows for local and remote control and its six slots provide for easy upgrades and reconfiguration (including future technologies) while in the field or in the lab. The ONT-506 also addresses the research and development requirements of both network manufacturers and operators with its multiple channel and port-test application.

“Because of the ONT-506’s multiple port and multiple applications capabilities that provide for realistic network simulation and full-load analysis, single-channel testing becomes inferior,” said Bernhard Mueller, general manager for Acterna’s Optical Transport unit. “With an open, PC-based Linux architecture, the ONT-506 is also intuitive and provides the most advanced applications that can be integrated into each user’s working environment.”

The development of new network elements occurs in different phases, and the Acterna ONT-506 can address all of them. During the module design phase, it is important that the specifications of each design release are met. This phase requires instruments that support various interfaces, technologies and conformance-testing capabilities. For the system integration testing phase, the manufacturer must thoroughly test the operation of hardware and software under different load and stress conditions and identify problems. With its multiple channel/multi port capability, the ONT-506 is a perfect fit for the test requirements of this phase. During the test-floor phase, the manufacturer determines the system’s compliance to external specifications, including those of international standardization bodies like ANSI or ITU-T. The latter test requirements are similar to those of the system integration phase, making the ONT-506 an ideal fit. The ONT-506 is also well suited for interoperability and production testing, and any other testing scenarios that require the power and flexibility of a multi-user, multi-port, multi-technology solution.

With its six slots the ONT-506 can utilize any combination of modules for the ONT product platform, including those that test SONET/SDH (2.5G/10G), Ethernet over SONET/SDH, Ethernet, OTN, and jitter/wander (10G/10.7G). The ONT-506 shares this flexibility with the other members of the ONT family, the portable four slot ONT-50 and the 12 slot, rack-mounted ONT-512.

About Acterna’s Optical Network Tester (ONT) platform family

The ONT platform family is a multi-functional, multi-port and multi-user family of solutions for fast and flexible testing of optical networks. The ONT product line is designed to address the optical and digital testing needs in R&D, system verification testing (SVT) and maintenance. There is a choice of Acterna ONT platforms covering rack-mountable (ONT-512) and portable mainframes (ONT-50 and 506), and a range of plug-in instrument modules for DWDM, SDH, SONET, OTN and Ethernet networks controlled via an easy-to-use user interface. This combination makes the ONT an exceptionally versatile and functional test resource for optical and physical layer tests, as well as performance testing. Designed to keep pace with the high-speed evolution of today’s communications technology, the ONT is the essential test tool for manufacturers, installers and operators of optical fiber networks. Acterna was named 2005 Carrier Vendor of Choice for SONET/SDH by Frost & Sullivan.
