Acterna Adds New Features to Popular Digital Services Activation Meter to Drive Efficient and Cost-Effective VoD, VoIP Deployment

<p>Hong Kong: Thursday, August 12th 2004 – Answering the need for cable technicians to get it right the first time, Acterna announced the Asia Pacific availability of its new Digital Service Activation Meter (DSAM) 3500 and 3600 models for testing cable modem services, digital video, analog video and PacketCable™ based voice over IP (VoIP). By significantly improving performance management and enhancing measurement and optimization techniques, these new DSAM models address the growing challenges faced by the cable industry as they deploy new video on demand (VoD), VoIP and other emerging services.</p>
<p>A winner in the category of cable telephony at the Communications Technology Readers' Choice Awards 2004, an annual program sponsored by the official trade journal of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) honoring the industry’s most innovative new products, Acterna's DSAM 3500 and 3600 were selected for multiple features that include testing cable modem services, digital video, analog video and PacketCable™ based voice over IP (VoIP).</p>
<p>Combining traditional and new capabilities, the DSAM 3500 and 3600 equips technicians with several critical advantages as they deploy new services, such as eliminating the need for multiple meters, proactively certifying that homes are “digital 2-way ready” during routine installations, ensuring customer “self installs” of high speed data (HSD) are more reliable and faster, and reducing additional calls for service and maintenance requests. In addition, advanced services such as VoD and VoIP can be enabled without the need to initiate a truck roll for additional service.</p>

<p>Robertson added, “With the rapid deployment of packet-based services, it is critical that a test meter's capabilities can be expanded to include the latest features. Now, any of Acterna’s DSAM meters can be upgraded to the DSAM-3500/3600 models to test IP performance over Ethernet interface, RF IP testing, and eventually in-service testing of VoIP services based on PacketCable™ protocol, covering the trends dominating today’s industry.”</p>
<p>The DSAM 3500 and 3600 support the need for a test instrument to test complete digital and IP services with simplicity, flexibility and ease. The meter is durable enough to withstand harsh weather conditions as well as any rough handling typically experienced in the field. The DSAM's mechanical design includes features to protect the meter and ensure a long lasting tool, such as recessed connectors, rounded corners, sealed enclosure and field replaceable display lenses. The DSAM-3600 model also includes a new advanced digital board which demodulates QAM carriers configured with deep interleave depth setting of I and J parameters equal to 128 and 4 respectively, typical in 256 QAM modulated carriers used for digital video transmission.</p>
