Spam Scourge Overblown – Workplace Email Volume Major Issue

<p>Wednesday July 21 2004 – Silverspan has just released their latest report “Australian IT Market Opinion Poll April 2004”. Silverspan is a specialist marketing agency, servicing the IT industry. Issues covered in the report include broadband and video conferencing usage, the quantity of email and spam messages received each day at work, factors considered important when purchasing mobile phones and business software, and work computer upgrade cycles.</p>

<p>The report is the fifth in a series of independent end-user surveys tracking attitudes and individual usage of technology in work environments. The information was collected via 225 telephone interviews carried out in April 2004 over a 2 week period.</p>
<p>Sebastian Rice, Managing Director of Silverspan commented on the survey results, “The deluge of spam seems to be under control for most people. Our research shows that the real issue for senior managers is the number of work emails received each day. The more staff in a company, the more email the person is likely to receive. Don’t expect work email volumes to decrease significantly as a result of the Federal government anti-spam legislation.”</p>
<p>The number of emails received at work (per day) was found to be: 0-9 emails 8%, 10-19 emails, 15%, 20-49 emails 38%, 50-99 emails 20%, 100+ emails 19%.</p>
<p>IT decision makers (57%) were found to be 2.85 times more likely to receive more than 50 emails per day than Finance Managers (20%). Government sector respondents were least likely to receive more than 50 emails per day (22%).</p>
<p>The amount of spam received each day by respondents was measured separately: No spam messages 34%, 1-9 spam messages 40%, 10-19 spam 14%, 20-49 spam 8%, 50-99 spam 2%, 100+ spam 2%. This survey was conducted just as the Australian Federal Governments new anti-spam legislation came into effect.</p>
<p>IT Support and Financial Decision makers (43%) were found to be 1.79 times more likely to receive no spam messages at all compared to IT decision makers (24%).</p>
<p>When asked whether their workplace blocked access to any Internet websites, 44% indicated no restrictions of any kind, 45% that some sites are blocked, 8% that a “usage policy” is in place but no technical block, and 2% indicated that all access is blocked.</p>
<p>When analysed by industry sector, 64% of education sector respondents indicated no restrictions at all are in place, while government sector respondents were the most restricted with only 34% indicating no restrictions. Government sector employees were the most likely to nominate that a “usage policy” was in place (25%).</p>
<p>The penetration rate of broadband Internet access at home was seen to have increased dramatically, with 36% of respondents indicating that they had a service. This compares with our July 2003 report result of 24% for the same question. Respondents working in the Banking &amp; Finance sector were found to be 3 times more likely to have a broadband service at home than government sector respondents (58% versus 19%).</p>
<p>Wireless LAN technology is now widely deployed, with 32% of those surveyed indicating they work in an office with a wireless network.</p>
<p>When asked about whether they had purchased anything online in the week before the survey, sales &amp; marketing manager were 4.8 times more likely to have shopped online than HR staff.</p>
<p>Respondents working within the Government sector were found to be atypical compared to managers from other industry sectors. They typically received fewer emails, were the group most likely to never receive spam emails, the least likely to think that video conferencing is a good substitute for a meeting (53%), and very unlikely (19%) to have a broadband connection at home.</p>
<p>All respondents to the survey were surveyed via telephone at work, with companies involved in the IT and telecommunications industry being deliberately excluded to eliminate biased answers. Respondents were selected to fit a representative demographic profile.</p>
