Progress Software Releases OpenEdge 10 Next Generation Development Suite

 • 19 February, 2004 10:05

Global Beta Program Participants Cite Reusable Business Logic, UI independence, Ease of Use and Standards-based Integration as Competitive Edge They Need to Rapidly Deliver Business Applications

Sydney and Bedford, MA—18 February 2004—Progress Software, a leading supplier of technology for building the world's best business applications, today announced the commercial availability of Progress® OpenEdge™ 10, the foundation for its component-based approach to building distributed applications for Service Oriented Architectures (SOA).

As an integrated product suite targeted at implementing business applications for the integrated extended enterprise, OpenEdge 10 gives professional application developers the ability to cost-effectively extend their applications by enabling them to reuse existing business logic while offering a wide variety of UI and operational choices.

More than 90 Progress APs participated in Progress’ Global Beta Program to put OpenEdge 10 to the test, confirming that it allows developers to quickly and easily expose their highly tailored applications as Web services.

According to Bloor Research, “OpenEdge supports possibly the widest deployment possibilities of any development environment we are aware of. Additionally it delivers operational management capability that optimizes the use of available resources without compromising quality of service. This reduces deployment costs. OpenEdge is probably the most comprehensive application development and integration environment currently provided by any vendor.”

As business systems have evolved to take advantage of new technology, business logic has become buried in increasingly complex non-standards-based “accidental architectures”, posing today’s developers with the challenge of efficiently sorting out and extending these mission-critical business systems to Web services environments.

OpenEdge Studio, OpenEdge 10’s premier development environment, offers the unique ability to easily expose business logic as Web services which are readily accessible across the entire enterprise in a variety of deployment options. By facilitating reuse of proven functionality and exposing it in a standards-based format, OpenEdge 10 reduces developer overhead and simplifies implementation and integration.

OpenEdge 10 provides UI independence, allowing developers to easily choose from among the most popular user interface technologies, including native support for Microsoft .NET or Java® UIs, without modifying their proven Progress-based business logic. It also affords two levels of support for Web services. The OpenEdge Application Servers and Clients offer native abilities to provide and consume Web services. For developers who want to incorporate a higher level of services orchestration and business process management, OpenEdge provides Sonic Software’s industry-leading enterprise service bus (ESB), Sonic ESB™.

By utilising Sonic ESB, OpenEdge allows application developers to create a standards-based method to share information with any other applications or services that are “plugged in” to the ESB. This permits Progress APs to easily extend their existing applications and market reach with new technologies.

Beta Program Participant See Measurable Results
Over 90 Progress APs beta tested OpenEdge 10 with impressive results. Partners confirmed OpenEdge 10’s ease of use, from installation to actual development of Web services. With OpenEdge 10, which was made commercially available on December 31st, Business Computer Projects, a UK-based supply chain solution provider, was able to generate industry-standard WSDL files for their Progress-based application, effortlessly transforming the business logic into an easily-shared, standards-based Web services module in just ten minutes.

“We have been able to do some really amazing things with this product,” said Tom McGourty, vice president of sales and marketing for gomembers, a leading supplier of association management systems. “Not only were we able to quickly adopt a .NET front-end to our Q application in record time, we are light years ahead of the competition in getting this next generation product to market.”

"We opened the box, we installed it, and we migrated our application,” said Geoff Crawford, president of Innov8 Computer Software, a leading supplier of financial software solutions. “That's it. Not a single line of code changed and we're instantly on OpenEdge 10. It really was that easy."

“The Progress OpenEdge platform has gained a global reputation for its rapid deployment, low overhead, high scalability and flexibility,” said Rick Borg, executive vice president and general manager of Epicor’s Manufacturing Solutions Group. “Native access to Progress from a .NET client allows us to leverage one of the most powerful and reliable business processing engines available, with the extensive, collaborative capabilities offered by .NET and Web services.”

“This is just one more way Progress is making it possible for companies to leverage their solid business logic and reliable database, while still being able to take advantage of the latest technology advancements,” says Dave Ireland, president of the Progress Company. “Unlike other popular development platforms, OpenEdge doesn’t require you to re-write your business logic from scratch in order to offer the latest Web services and integration capabilities.”
