Novell to Join Eclipse, Facilitate Development of Solutions on Novell Technologies

 • 22 January, 2004 11:43

Marking another step in its support of the open source development model, Novell will join Eclipse, an open source initiative dedicated to providing a commercial-quality platform for the creation of highly integrated software development tools. In adopting Eclipse technology, Novell will for the first time provide a common tooling strategy for developers who build on Novell technologies, significantly reducing complexity by providing a unified environment for building, testing and debugging solutions across the entire Novell technology portfolio. Novell's membership in Eclipse will reinforce Novell's commitment to the developer community and contribute to driving development on Linux in that community.

"As we continue to drive forward our Linux strategy and enhance our secure identity management and Web services offerings, one of the missing components has been a unified development environment for working across Novell® technologies," said Chris Stone, Novell vice chairman - Office of the CEO. "Eclipse fills that missing gap. We now endorse and support Eclipse as the integrated development environment of choice for all Novell products."

Founded in 2001, Eclipse brings together leading industry vendors, including IBM, Borland, Red Hat and others, to develop and promote specifications for high-quality open source software development tools. The Eclipse developer community goal is to create products that are interoperable, based on plug-in technology and a common platform. Eclipse-based tools support a large number of development languages, prepare applications for deployment platforms ranging from embedded devices to large servers and middleware, and are available in multiple languages, ensuring global applicability. By sharing core integration technology, Novell and other vendors who build on the Eclipse platform can concentrate on their areas of software expertise, creating new value-added solutions for customers.

"Novell's endorsement and involvement is welcomed by Eclipse," said Skip McGaughey, chairperson of the Eclipse Board of Stewards. "Novell joins a growing number of vendors who have adopted the Eclipse platform, which further validates Eclipse as an excellent platform for development tools - regardless of language or platform. The Eclipse organization is pleased to have Novell contribute to the project and leverage the Eclipse Platform to ease development tasks across its product line."

The extensible nature of the Eclipse Platform enables Novell to provide a common tooling environment regardless of programming language, development framework or operating system. Developers wishing to build solutions using Novell's exteNd* technology (J2EE*) or open source Mono technology will find a common home in Eclipse whether the target platform is Linux, Windows* or NetWare®.

"Novell is very excited to lend its support to the Eclipse Consortium," said Chris Cooper, director of developer services for Novell. "The appeal of Eclipse from a developer's point of view is the ability to combine the tools and features you want, the way you want them, and have them work together seamlessly. With the addition of Eclipse plug-ins, developing solutions based on Novell technologies will become much more uniform, quick and efficient, increasing the attractiveness of Novell platforms for both independent developers and in-house corporate IT staff."
