Conexus announces Australian release of Spy Sweeper

Latest version responds to blended spyware threats; ten active shields stop spyware before it reaches a PC

Sydney, 7 September 2004 - Conexus, a leading specialist distributor of enterprise, education and entertainment technologies for Windows and Macintosh, today announced the release in Australia of Webroot's Spy Sweeper 3.2, which protects users' privacy and maximises system performance by deleting unnecessary files.

The latest version of Spy Sweeper offers several enhancements that more effectively combat increasingly intelligent spyware programs, including newly identified blended threats. Blended threats can combine the behaviours of two or more spyware exploits, and are more elusive in their activities and difficult to remove than their predecessors.

In a two-pronged approach, Spy Sweeper protects against newly discovered and existing spyware threats with new proactive capabilities for fighting spyware and significant enhancements to traditional removal technologies designed to identify, root out and quarantine even the most malicious spyware.

"Webroot has reengineered Spy Sweeper's real-time protection, detection and removal processes so our users have the most technologically advanced spyware protection available," said David Murray, managing director, Conexus. "Consumers use their PC for everything, and it is increasingly important to provide protection from spyware before it has a chance to harm their computer, steal personal data or invade their privacy."

Spy Sweeper detects and removes all forms of adware and spyware including Trojans, keyloggers, system monitors, blended threats and more. Spy Sweeper is armed with a comprehensive spyware threat database to sniff out and eradicate more than more 27,000 spyware traces.

Advanced spyware protection is necessary to defend against recently discovered blended threats, such as "form loggers" which take advantage of PCs with out-of-date security patches, and trick users into installing a Trojan horse program. The Trojan horse includes a keylogger designed to look for visits to one of 50 financial institution web sites. When a user visits one of these sites and keys in their username and password, the form logger automatically captures that information and sends it to a third party before the information is encrypted for verification.

Spy Sweeper protects users from emerging browser spyware threats, like form loggers, with a set of new Internet Explorer and browsing shields:

Hijack Shield. Prevents redirected web searches

IE Favorites Shield. Protects users from surreptitious additions to their favourites list

Host File Shield. Stops malicious web sites from conducting an address hijacking, which diverts a user from a desired site to an undesired site.

This shield also restores the original address for already damaged sites.

Spyware can attack even when a user is not online, and Webroot added several operating system Shields to reinforce Spy Sweeper's ability to catch even the trickiest spyware when it attempts to download, install or run on a user's PC:

Start Up Shield. This new addition to Spy Sweeper's Active Memory
Shield prevents the addition of programs to the start up menu without a user's permission.

Windows Messenger Service Shield. Protects users from phoney pop-ups, which act as a disguise for spyware installations.

New ease-of-use additions, including the option to skip certain areas during a scan and a resizable user interface, increase user flexibility.

Pricing and Availability

Spy Sweeper supports Windows 98, 2000, ME and XP. The software is priced at $64.95 per year, with a discount for multiple-year subscriptions. To find your nearest stockist, contact Conexus on 02 9975 2799, 03 9328 1277 or
