PC maker Lenovo has used a basement price strategy in China to become the country's second largest tablet vendor, coming ahead of rivals offering Android-based products, according to research firm IDC.

Lenovo's net profit for its fiscal fourth quarter grew by 59 per cent, as the world's second largest PC maker saw continued growth in sales across both mature and emerging markets.

Lenovo is working with chip maker Intel on a future ThinkPad tablet based on Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system, a Lenovo executive said.

Tablets are the hot tech product of 2011, but most seem to offer very little differentiation in screen size, specifications and software. Lenovo is at least attempting something new with its ThinkPad Tablet: it's aimed squarely at business users and comes with a digitiser pen for drawing.
