CouchSurfing hooks you up with people who are willing to provide their couch/bed/room free of charge.
But CouchSurfing is not just for cheapskates. It's a social network to meet people and make friends in unfamiliar cities and countries, which is great if you happen to be backpacking by yourself.
The app is free, but CouchSurfing does require a $25 bank transaction to make sure you're a real person, with a bank account.
