In its 2006 annual report Coles noted that its five-year transformation program which covered procurement, safety, IT and supply chain initiatives was expected to deliver benefits worth $425 million in 2008. It was, according to Fletcher, a "world class" initiative.
While Fletcher acknowledged in his letter to the newspaper that there had been a delay in implementing some planned projects, others deemed more important had been fast-tracked.
Fletcher concluded: "To paint this business decision as an IT bungle is an unfair and inaccurate slur on a team of hard working IT professionals, who have successfully delivered one of the biggest technology transformations ever seen."
Sharp intake of breath. Here is a chief executive of one of Australia's iconic businesses going into bat for IT. Admittedly he was CEO of a company in play, who owed it to his shareholders to wring the best price for their assets. But nevertheless he went out on a limb and said IT's OK.
So is it? What is the state of play in IT at Coles? How do you decide what programs to delay, and what to priorities when everything around you is in flux? How can you run information technology with an eye to the future knowing that everything could change when the new owners come in? And how do you get such a chummy relationship with the CEO?
Call it due diligence, call it plain nosiness — CIO magazine decided to ask John Fletcher and Peter Mahler what was really going on in Coles and received their responses on the day the Wesfarmers bid was announced.
