Buzzword Barrage

Let's begin with a rundown of all the competing marketing terms - similar though they may be - now being used to describe utility computing, and who's behind each of the main ones. IBM: As we said above, "On-Demand Computing" is Big Blue's favourite flavour. And you'll hear it more times this year than you'll visit a Gloria Jean's, maybe even more times than you'll get a caffeine buzz.

HP: Utility Data Centre (or, in dreaded acronym form, UDC). From the company that claims to have actually invented the concept, or first wrote about it, more than 20 years ago. (Okay, no one ever said being early provides an edge in clever naming.)

Sun Microsystems: N1. You want cryptic? No acronym for these guys. How about just one letter and one digit?

But wait, there's more. Now, it gets a little more descriptive (or abstract, depending on your perspective), as the different vendors get into terms for more actual offerings.

  • The Virtual Data Centre: Sun seems to be hitting on this term the most, though the others all have their ways of describing it as a sweet spot. It means pooling resources to make them seem like one big machine. (This comes on the heels of term "virtualisation" being my vote for the top IT buzzword of 2002, certainly in the storage arena.)

  • Autonomic Computing: a term being proffered mainly by IBM, at least in this way. Think self-healing networks and systems.

  • Adaptive Infrastructure: HP's take on autonomic computing. And, oh how curious: its term is seven syllables long, too.

  • Grid Computing: dozens to hundreds of individual systems (PCs, workstations, servers) connected via LAN or WAN to solve computer or data-intensive problems, now evolving from scientific uses to more practical business applications.
  • Web Services: another overhyped term in its own right, but one that actually can be better understood as part of the larger utility computing concept. Its initial promise is to automate communication between disparate applications, taking advantage of such evolving standards as XML. But where it's headed goes well beyond software communication protocols, to delivering real services (its namesake, after all), even going beyond "software as a service" to "business process as a service".

    Information Security can sometimes be a funny field to work in. Some days it seems as if anybody with their hands on unpublished exploit code can sell it for all they're worth, and others it seems that they are set to become the target of law enforcement and the companies the code affects. It does help if you don't work for one of the companies that is set to be affected by the exploits you are trying to sell and aren't trying to bootstrap a competing company in the process.
