IBM in Euro 25M deal to overhaul Spanish health service
IBM has entered an agreement to overhaul health service information systems in Spain, as part of a deal designed to ease management and patient administration across 14 hospitals, 107 clinics and 300 local doctor's offices.
The four-year project to redesign management processes for the country's Frontier Heath Service (SES) in Spain's Extremadura region is valued at Euro 25.5 million (AUD$44.5 million), IBM said Friday.
IBM is leading the project, which will also count on technology partners SAP and T-Systems International, as well as Spanish consultancy group Mestesa and Extremadura's Center of Socioeconomic Studies (CESEX), the company said.
Under the agreement, the health service will utilize 31 IBM pSeries and xSeries servers and IBM's WebSphere Business Integration Server software for more efficient patient information sharing.
One of the key goals of the project is to integrate geographically diverse systems, applications and data pools, according to the SES. The health service added that the project will also see a wider implementation of Linux-based systems in Spain, with use by over 14,000 health professions.
The deal represents another Spanish conquest for IBM, which earlier this year signed a contract with Spain's Ministry of Science and Technology to build a 40 trillion floating-point operations per second (40T flops) supercomputer at the Technical University of Catalonia. The Spanish government is investing Euro 70 million to build the supercomputer, which they hope will be the fastest in Europe when completed.
