Federal CIO post up for grabs
Having dealt with the disruption of a federal election and a change of department and minister, the coveted post of Federal CIO has finally been advertised by the Department of Finance and Administration (DoFA).
The new person charged with the promotion of "excellence in the way government agencies use information technology" will be officially known as the Australian Government CIO, or AGCIO.
However, precisely where the AGCIO post sits in Canberra's much-watched bureaucratic food chain seems to have suffered a minor adjustment, no doubt to fit it into its new departmental home.
The first incarnation of the whole of government CIO was announced at an equivalent ranking to a full departmental secretary or agency CEO when under the umbrella of Communications, IT and the Arts.
However, advertising for the new position now states the newish Australian Government CIO will now report to the Secretary of the Department of Finance.
DoFA's current organizational chart also lists the AGCIO position as a "general manager" for the Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO), and positions the post one rung below current Finance Secretary and master of surplus preservation Dr Ian Watt.
Which is not to say the AGCIO position has taken a fall in rank or salary - especially considering the post is now armed with its own personal Minister of the Crown, Eric Abetz.
