Data warehousing vendor Ascential Software has acquired Torrent Systems to add increased scalability to its products.
In an announcement today, Westboro, Mass.-based Ascential said it will incorporate most of Torrent's 60 employees and the company's parallel processing infrastructure technologies into its Ascential DataStage product line.
Ascential is paying US$46 million in cash for Cambridge, Mass.-based Torrent, which specializes in software for data warehousing, business intelligence and analytical applications. Parallel processing improves software performance by simultaneously harnessing the power of hundreds or thousands of computer processors.
Peter Gyenes, chairman and CEO of Ascential, said in a statement that the acquisition "allows us to immediately come to market with an integrated, high-end offering rather than developing it internally and delaying time to market."
Since last March, Ascential has had an agreement with Torrent to include Torrent's technology in the DataStage XE product line. The acquisition will now expand that arrangement, further enhancing the software through Torrent technologies.
Ascential was previously the information asset management subsidiary of the former Informix Corp. in Menlo Park, Calif. In September of last year, Informix split itself into two independent companies: Informix Software, focusing on databases, and Ascential. But in July, Informix sold its database software division to IBM in a $1 billion deal.
