Death of ICT pioneer
ICT industry pioneer Tony Benson died on Friday, February 11 after a four-month battle with cancer.
Benson, aged 68, was an outstanding achiever in the ICT sector and was awarded the Pearcey Medal in recognition of his lifetime commitment to the industry.
He began working as a scientific programmer for NCR back in 1960, and in a span of 39 years came to hold executive sales and marketing positions before becoming a director.
He later founded Bullant Technology and sat on the boards of Grouputer, Marketboomer, Holocentric International and Prism International.
Benson served as national president of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) (1978-79), chaired the ICT Alliance and Software Engineering Australia, and held senior roles with the ACS Foundation and AIIA as well as participating in various government bodies.
Benson maintained an active interest and understanding of the issues facing the Australian ICT sector until his death.
The ACS elected Tony as an ACS Fellow in 1994 and then awarded him an Honorary Life Membership in 1998.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, 18 February.
