Implementing SOA can be an extremely expensive undertaking. You might need to purchase several products within the SOA stack like an enterprise service bus (ESB), a business process modeling (BPM) tool, a portal, a rules engine and a data services tool. But it doesn't stop there. There are additional tools for testing, SOA governance, security... and the list goes on and on. In addition to all the software, you need to budget for training, hardware, consulting and salaries.

On Monday, Microsoft's Bill Hilf, general manager for platform strategy, spoke further about the deal with Jeremy Kirk, addressing how Microsoft views its intellectual property relative to Linux.

Open source could become a vital piece of enterprise infrastructures. Open source development is becoming a moneymaking proposition. And now understanding the companies that sell and the communities that create open source code is becoming a critical part of the CIO's job.

IT managers who once used Linux chiefly to support Web and file-and-print servers said at last week's LinuxWorld Conference & Expo here that they're now running key applications and databases on Linux-based systems -- a sign that the open-source software is penetrating deeper into corporate enterprises.
