iiNet has launched IPTV on the National Broadband Network through NBN Co’s Multicast channel.
NBN Co launched the Multicast feature on the NBN in late September this year.
“The NBN Multicast service lets us deliver awesome, high quality video entertainment to our customers, such as our innovative Fetch TV service,” Stephen Harley, iiNet chief product officer, said in a statement.
iiNet, TransACT, WestNet, Netspace and Internode have all completed NBN Co’s Multicast certification process, with the service to be phased in across the NBN.
A trial of the feature will be carried out at a Rhodes greenfield site in NSW using Fetch TV.
“Multicast is really aimed at delivering content to a large number of users – people who are going to look at the content at the same time,” Jim Hassell, head of product development and sales at NBN Co, has previously told Computerworld Australia.
More than 300,000 Australian households have subscription IPTV, which could pose challenges for operators such as Foxtel, according to a study by Telsyte earlier this year.
