ACMA announces new milestone for Do Not Call Register

8 million numbers registered for freedom from telemarketers

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) today announced that 8 million numbers have been added to the Australian Do Not Call Register, which bans telemarketers from making unsolicited calls to the numbers.

Nearly two-thirds of households have one or more numbers on the list.

"Our research tells us that nearly 90 per cent of those registered notice a significant reduction in these unwanted calls and faxes," ACMA chairperson Chris Chapman said in a statement.

As at 30 June this year, more than 6700 telemarketers and 190 fax marketers have created accounts to check numbers in the Do Not Call Register, according to ACMA. The organisation said that there have been more than 5.4 billion numbers checked in the register.

The Do Not Call Register was created in May 2007, after the federal parliament passed legislation in June a year earlier.

In early 2010, ACMA announced that it had registered 4 million numbers for the free service. By the time of the service's fifth anniversary in May this year, some 7.5 million numbers had been registered.

A number of organisations have faced action by ACMA for breaking the Do Not Call Register Act 2006, most recently Sydney Leisure Guide, which at the start of October submitted to an enforceable undertaking to participate in compliance training and log its telemarketing efforts.
