Victoria "strengthens ties" with Huawei

Chinese company Huawei will hold workshops in Victoria to help businesses learn about its products.

A Huawei delegation will visit Victoria to run workshops for local ICT businesses next year to engage with emerging ICT businesses in the state and strengthen ties with Victorian companies.

The announcement was made following a trip by Gordon Rich-Phillips, Minister for Technology, to Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China as part of the 2012 China Super Trade Mission.

“The workshop will provide local ICT suppliers with access to the world’s largest telecommunications equipment supplier and engage with Huawei buyers,” Rich-Phillips said in a statement.

“The opportunity for Victorian businesses to get face-to-face time with Huawei’s procurement team is an outstanding one – and one that could make a major difference for Victoria’s ICT exports.”

While the company has been banned from participating in the National Broadband Network, Rich-Phillips said it was active in Victoria’s ICT market. For example, Huawei is supplying video conferencing equipment for Federation Square in Melbourne.

“Huawei is one of the world’s leading technology firms. The company’s continued investment in Victoria reflects our status as a dynamic regional hub for technology and innovation,” Rich-Phillips said.

Tertiary Victorian ICT students are also visiting Huawei’s headquarters where they will be trained in Huawei products as part of a five-week scholarship program to China.

Huawei recently revealed it had partly-funded trips to its headquarters in Shenzhen, China for around half a dozen federal members of parliament. The company also revealed most state premiers had visited its headquarters, although it had not funded those trips.

Huawei also stated at a public hearing of the parliamentary joint committee on intelligence and security in Canberra that it still has a long way to go to win over the Australian public and government’s trust.
