Microsoft outlines Office 365 enhancements

Online sharing functions in Microsoft’s Office 365 software suite have been upgraded to work with non-Internet Explorer (IE) browsers including Safari, Chrome and Firefox.
Speaking at the recent Tech Ed 2012 conference, Microsoft US technical product manager, Andy O’Donald, told delegates that the vendor had invested heavily in making sure that Web Apps, which allow users to view, share and edit Office documents online, worked with different browsers.

The vendor has also upgraded the co-authoring function in Office 365 which meant that browser-to-browser editing for Word and PowerPoint documents was now included.
Another area of investment was with social networking feeds. For example, enterprise customers will be able to pull in data from feeds such as Twitter and include this information in the Office 365 environment.
“The other point to make about these social features is that security and compliance come `baked in’,” O’Donald said.
“All of this information that is being shared in your organisation [via Office 365] is being stored inside the IT environment so it can be checked for compliance just like other information such as emails.”
