Townsville on track for NBN fibre

Three areas in north Queensland have been confirmed for the fibre rollout for the National Broadband Network (NBN). Townsville, Cairns and Mackay are to be switched on to the network in the next 12 months.
A total of 16,600 homes across 12 suburbs will be able to access the NBN via fibre in the areas.
In Townsville, 8200 premises will receive fibre, while 2700 premises in Mackay and 5700 premises in Cairns will also receive the NBN via fibre.
“The NBN is on track to rollout to 429,000 homes and businesses in Queensland by the middle of 2015,” Jan McLucas, Labor senator for Queensland, said in a statement.
Townsville was one of five mainland test sites for the NBN, with the network switched on in the area in September last year.
National’s leader, Warren Truss, recently claimed Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton would not receive the NBN via fibre.
However, Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, was quick to refute the claims.
"Over 50,000 homes and businesses in Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton are already part of the fibre rollout," he said at the time.
