Vodafone NZ deploys 100Gbs data network

Upgrade brings reported speeds of 100 gigabits per second (Gbs) between telco’s two Auckland data centres

Vodafone New Zealand has rolled out what it claims is the fastest data network in the country with a reported speed of 100 gigabits per second (Gbs).

The network upgrade, completed by US-based networking vendor, Ciena, links two of Vodafone NZ’s Auckland data centres. The upgrade was carried out to meet growing customer demand for capacity.

According to Vodafone NZ chief network officer, Tony Baird, data usage on the company’s mobile network has grown by more than 125 per cent year-on-year while data usage on its fixed network has increased 90 per cent year-on-year.

“Upgrading the network between our two Auckland data centres to the fastest in New Zealand means we can stay ahead of the curve for our customers with the ever-increasing use of bandwidth intensive data services,” he said in a statement.

Baird added that the upgrade required no re-engineering or discontinuation of service due to the “robust operation” of Ciena’s 100Gbs technology running alongside existing 10Gbs and 40Gbs channels.

“This greatly improves the efficiencies of Vodafone’s high-speed network, opening the door to new applications and additional capacity as the network evolves and expands,” he said.

The network upgrade follows Vodafone NZ’s acquisition of Telstra’s NZ business, TelstraClear, in July for $A660 million. The acquisition included TelstraClear’s voice and data services, network infrastructure and NZ customers.
