Western Digital intros new collaboration tools, Dropbox integration

The features are in the next generation of its WD 2go mobile app

Western Digital (WD) today introduced new, free collaboration and file management features -- including Dropbox integration -- in the next generation of its WD 2go mobile app for the company's personal cloud products.

The consumer products affected by the upgrades include My Book Live, My Book Live Duo and My Net N900 Central HD router with storage. As an example, My Book Live allows users to store up to 3TB of content from anywhere on a tablet, smartphone, PC or Mac computer.

WD's personal cloud products provide shared storage on the home network, allowing users to create a central online repository for documents, photos and videos. The products can also perform automatic backup of content on all computers in a home.

The new version of WD's 2go mobile app is available for iOS and Android devices, and it allows users to move, copy and share content between their mobile device, their Dropbox and their WD personal cloud.

For example, users can upload or download files to or from a mobile device to their WD personal cloud storage and then share that content from WD's cloud storage as an email link or an attachment.

Users can also send files to, and receive files from, third-party apps installed on their mobile device using the "open with" function.

WD 2go is currently available as a free download from the iTunes App Store, Google Play and Amazon Appstore for Android.

"By combining access to Dropbox and personal cloud storage into a single intuitive mobile app, WD is empowering consumers with the flexibility and control of anytime, any-device management of their growing libraries of digital content," Jim Welsh, executive vice president for WD's branded products and consumer electronics groups, said in a statement.
