Twitter crashes twice Thursday

Microblogger goes down across all platforms, comes back online and crashes again

Twitter went down this afternoon and it went down hard.

The microblogging site crashed around 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday. The outage crossed all platforms, taking down third-party apps, along with the Twitter apps on the Android and iOS platforms.

The site came back up around 1:15 p.m.

Twitter quickly noted on its Status Page, and in an email to Computerworld, that the issue that caused the outage has been resolved and all services are currently operational. However, the company did not say what caused the crash or whether all users were affected.

Soon after those messages went out, the site was down again. The outage again seems to cross all platforms.

As of 2 p.m., the site was still down and its Status Page said the problem was "on-going."

Generally, when an online site, such as Facebook, crashes, users are quick to take to Twitter to vent their frustrations. But with the Twitter crash today, users had to wait for the site to come back online to tweet their complaints.

""Hey, guys, did you hear Twitter was down?" Sent via cave painting," tweeted @jeeveswilliams. And @EliGP added, "The worst part about Twitter being down is that you can't tweet about Twitter being down."

Some users had a bit of fun at Twitter's expense.

"You learn a lot when #Twitter is down. For example, my wife left me four years ago," tweeted @BorowitzReport. And @HalaGorani tweeted, "Turns out I read a book while Twitter was down."
