Nokia announces March arrival for Lumia 800 smartphone

Nokia's Lumia 800 Windows Phone will be available in Australia in March

Nokia's Lumia 800 smartphone — the first Nokia phone to use the Microsoft's Windows Phone software — will be available in Australia in March, the embattled company announced today.

The Nokia Lumia 800 will be sold on all three Australian networks — Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone — and will also be available through "all major retailers", the company said. No pricing details have been announced.

The Lumia 800 was unveiled globally in October and is the result of Nokia's decision in February 2011 to switch from Symbian to the Windows Phone platform for its core smartphones.

"Nokia Lumia will change the way people think about Nokia," said Nokia Australia’s managing director, Chris Carr. "It signifies a new beginning for the company, bringing together the very best of Nokia's handset design and services with the latest Windows Phone software."

"Interest locally for Nokia Lumia, our first range of Nokia with Windows Phone devices, has been extremely positive, with a significant appetite from operators and retailers looking to offer consumers a real smartphone alternative."

The Nokia Lumia 800 shares an almost identical physical design to Nokia's N9 but utilises the latest 7.5 "Mango" version of Windows Phone software. It has a 3.7in AMOLED screen, is powered by a single-core 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor, has 512MB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. It also has an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics that doubles as a 720p HD video recorder.

Australian models of the Nokia Lumia 800 will include Nokia Drive, a free turn-by-turn GPS navigator and will come in four colours: black, blue (cyan), pink (magenta) and white.
