Bendigo and Adelaide Bank upgrades customer service applications

Implements IBM XIV Gen3 storage, SAN volumes controller

In a bid to support its growing customer business applications, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank has installed two IBM XIV Gen3 storage systems.

The systems will support file applications, Exchange, SQL databases and recovery applications. The upgrades also include IBM storage area network (SAN) volumes controller nodes for the Bank’s customer service operations.

Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, which owns Bendigo Bank, Adelaide Bank, Sandhurst Trustees, Leveraged Equities, Bendigo Wealth, Rural Bank and Oxford Funding, is the first Australian organisation to deploy the hardware.

Bendigo and Adelaide Bank storage team leader, Greg Smith, said in a statement that as new customer applications were deployed, the bank noticed a steady increase in IO load and storage server utilisation.

“Our objective is to be the number one customer-connected bank in Australia,” he said. “The main thrust of application development has been around knowing and understanding customers better.”

In addition, the Bank has been able to consolidate its storage requirements into a smaller number of controllers. “The XIV Gen3s will ensure performance improvements in our applications, allowing us to provision storage quickly so that the banks can continue to grow, within its current data centre footprint,” Smith said.

In July 2010, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank partnered with Suncorp Bank for a combined automatic teller machine (ATM) network. At the time, the two banks said their 2.4 million customers now had access to a combined ATM network comprising 2,000 machines across Australia, without incurring a direct fee.
