Teachers Credit Union appoints CIO, moves to become bank

Former Westpac executive, to take on the newly created role

The Teachers Credit Union has appointed its new chief information officer. Former Westpac executive, David Chapman, will take on the newly created role.

It is an interesting time to join the institution; as CIO, Chapman will be front and centre during the credit union’s transition to Teachers Mutual Bank in April 2012.

The move is subject to APRA approval. Nonetheless, Chapman will have responsibility for leading the IT operations and overseeing project management.

Chapman was a program director for the Westpac and St George Bank systems integration program. His IT career spans 25 year covering people and large scale systems management, across insurance, card and retail banking portfolios at both a national and international level.

“I’m looking forward to leveraging my experience and strengths to build on the solid foundations already in place across Teachers Credit Union systems and infrastructure,” Chapman said in a statement. “As a large credit union, but relatively small in banking terms, it certainly punches above its weight from a technological point of view.”

His appointment follows the departure of its IT manager, Colin Thomas, who has moved to Queensland. Chapman will report to deputy CEO, Brad Hedgman.

“David’s extensive experience and skills will enhance our quality team as we consolidate our strengths in preparation for the transformation to Teachers Mutual Bank, and continue to leverage our competitive advantage as a real alternative to the 'big four' banks, ” Hedgman said.
