Aussies follow trends on YouTube

Australians couldn't get enough of Rebecca Black's Friday video on YouTube or LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem, and succumbed to the local "cone-ing" craze.

Australians followed most of the world's trends on YouTube this year, helping to push Rebecca Black's song Friday to the top of the most-watched videos for 2011.

But interest in home-grown music sent Gotye's video for Somebody That I Used to Know up to No.2 in Australia's most-watched music videos, right behind the global No.1, LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem.

While "planking" may have inspired some pranksters to post pictures on Facebook, Aussie jokers with video cameras are baffling fast-food drive-through attendants across the nation by "cone-ing".

This involves grabbing a soft-serve ice-cream cone by the ice-cream instead of the cone and driving away.

YouTube says Australians also came to the site for news, with some of the top searches for the floods in Toowoomba and regarding the death of Osama bin Laden.

But mostly it's all been about animal videos and other crazy stuff, according to YouTube trends manager Kevin Allocca.

"The 10 most-watched YouTube videos of 2011 show that around the world, whatever language we speak, there are certain things that bring us all together around a computer screen or mobile phone — adorable babies, talented performers, and clever advertising," he said.
