School students in Queensland will receive 65,000 notebooks before the end of the year thanks to a new deal between the Queensland Department of Education and Training (DET) and Acer.
The Acer Aspire 1830T notebooks will be supplied under round three of the National Secondary School Computer Fund, with CIO of Queensland DET, David O’Hagan, saying the project is a first because of the 3G capability of the devices being rolled out.
“A rollout of high-end, 3G laptops has never been done before in Australia, let alone on this scale,” O’Hagan said.
“This 3G initiative will ensure more than 60,000 state high school students [will] have access to the department’s online learning environment, anywhere and at any time.”
The agreement, which also includes Acer’s Educare solution and Computrace licence protection, is a vital step forward for the Queensland education system, O’Hagan claimed.
“The decision to purchase 3G laptops means students will have better access to important online resources, resulting in improved learning outcomes, collaboration and greater opportunity for personalised learning,” he said.

Top Reasons to Implement an SOA Governance Strategy: A List for IT Executives
Service-oriented architecture (SOA) has moved beyond hype to widespread acceptance as an IT strategy for delivering business value. SOA promotes the notion of modularity, providing overwhelming flexibility and superior economics for addressing business demands. The purpose of SOA governance is to help you ensure that this does not happen. This paper outlines the most compelling reasons for you to establish SOA governance within your organization. -
Cloud printing in the enterprise: liberating the mobile print experience from cables, operating systems and physical boundaries
In recent years mobile technology has proliferated throughout the enterprise. Today, virtually no one in the workforce is bound to a desk to work, check e-mail or communicate with co-workers and customers. At the same time, we’re seeing the rise of cloud technologies, loosely defined as online resources, often provided as a service, that manage the data and software that used to run solely on PCs. This merger of mobile and cloud technologies is on its way to becoming one of most significant enablers of business productivity and innovation seen in the past decade. Read more.
