Banks 'not doing enough on ATM security'

Consumers are being exposed to fraud and robbery at automatic cash machines, says NSW Attorney-General.

Consumers are being exposed to fraud and robbery at automatic cash machines and banks aren't doing enough to protect them, the NSW Attorney General says.

Speaking at the opening of a crime conference in Sydney, Greg Smith criticised banks for not doing enough to minimise the risks to ATM users despite the institutions making record profits.

"The banks are making record profits, fewer tellers and all of that, but they expect you to take the risk, in a sense, of exposing yourself to robbery or to fraud," Mr Smith said on Wednesday.

He said consumers using ATMs usually had to take it upon themselves to shield their PIN from anyone nearby.

It is often left up to public bodies, like the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), to develop new technologies to bolster security at ATMs.

But he conceded that some banks had stepped up ATM security.

"In recent times we've seen (at) banks (that) sometimes you have to go inside the bank to use the ATM."
