It’s an issue that keeps many a CIO awake at night — how do you create a technologically flexible workplace while maintaining a strong IT framework and security? How do you track ongoing costs and benefits?

CIOs are facing increasing pressure from both employees and executives alike to use devices such as tablets and smartphones for both work and play. Look around – if the organisation doesn’t provide these devices then it’s increasingly common for employees to take a BYO approach. To an end user it sounds like a simple proposition, but CIOs know that a lot more must go on behind the scenes in order to understand the true benefits and costs of allowing consumer-style mobile devices into the enterprise. They must consider issues such as whether these devices and mobile applications can be used to improve business processes, who’s involved in the decision-making process, who will drive take-up, and what policies are needed to manage risk.
