Wyse acquires Trellia for cloud-based mobile management

The company's platform can manage iPhones, iPads and Android-based devices

Thin client maker Wyse Technology has acquired Canadian company Trellia to help it manage the growing number of smartphones and tablets used by enterprises, Wyse said on Monday.

Trellia has developed a cloud-based management platform that allows enterprises to manage smartphones and tablets from Apple, Research In Motion and the Android camp.

For example, the IT department can use it to collect an inventory of all applications installed on its Apple iPads and iPhones. The platform also allows the IT staff to set different usage and configuration policies for different groups of employees and detect when a BlackBerry user is roaming abroad.

The versions for Android and iOS are more complete management solutions, while the version for BlackBerry OS works as a complement to BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) to add more control over costs.

Much will remain the same after the acquisition has been completed. The biggest change looks to be the branding.

No financial details of the deal were announced, but Trellia will be turned into wholly-owned subsidiary of Wyse, according to Wyse's website.

Trellia's team at its headquarters in Montreal will remain in place and intact, according to Wyse. Also, there are no planned pricing changes: the licensing model will remain the same. For Trellia's Canadian customers, the cloud instance will remain in Canada, it said.

This isn't Wyse's first foray into the smartphone and tablet market. The company today offers PocketCloud, a product that allows users to remotely access their desktop from a smartphone or tablet. The company also offers a management tool for thin clients.
