Alcatel-Lucent revenue drop in Q3, but still made a profit

Enterprise and IP divisions saw growth and helped Alcatel-Lucent to stay in the black

Alcatel-Lucent reported a drop in revenue during the third quarter, but the company still made a €194 million (US$268 million) profit. However, the future looks murky, the company said on Friday.

Revenue for the quarter ending Sept. 30 was €3.8 billion, down 6.8 percent year on year. The €194 million profit is an improvement over the same period last year, when it made €25 million.

Most of Alcatel-Lucent's divisions saw their revenue drop during the third quarter. Worst off were the wireline and network application divisions, which both saw sales decrease by more than 20 percent.

Sales grew in the enterprise and the IP (Internet Protocol) divisions, up by 8.9 percent and 2.7 percent respectively. Alcatel-Lucents's service router business helped drive growth for the IP division. Revenue in the enterprise division got a boost from data networks, as companies invested more in core and access networks, including Wi-Fi, Alcatel-Lucent said.

Alcatel-Lucent's numbers compare unfavorably with those of its competitor Ericsson. The Swedish company increased its revenue by 17 percent to 55.5 billion Swedish kronor ($8.4 billion), while its net income for the quarter was 3.8 billion kronor.

The grim economic situation, especially in Europe, means Alcatel-Lucent is in for a challenging last three months of 2011. The company now expects weaker revenues than initially planned in the fourth quarter, it said.

Today’s threat environment is as dynamic as the business world in which we operate. As the communications channels we use continue to proliferate and evolve, so too have the vulnerabilities. Finding the right balance between ensuring the security of sensitive data, enabling the free flow of information and making full use of the latest web-based technologies can be a challenge. Deep content inspection is a vital layer in any unified information security strategy, helping organisations to take control over their information assets while proactively protecting against malware and data leakage. • Case Study - TNT Express successfully reduces their paper usage and costs using a new document solution
in 2009 TNT decided to evaluate the market for new head office multifunction devices (MFD) as their current MFD fleet was almost seven years old. They were also looking for a provider who would provide cost and service reporting as well as help streamline their electronic archiving requirements via the scanning of dockets and documents. • Maximise Software Cost Savings by License Reharvesting, Recycling & Applying Product Use Rights
Software asset management (SAM) is a complex process that enables organisations to gain control of their software estate from both a license compliance and financial standpoint. In many organisations, SAM represents one of the few remaining ways that substantial IT savings can be realised. McKinsey and Sand-Hill Group estimate that 30% or more of IT budgets are consumed by software license and maintenance costs. By optimising the SAM process, organisations can maximise software utilisation, reduce the risk of non-compliance (audits, fees, penalties), and reduce overall IT costs by as much as 5 to 10% per year.
