Swinburne opens Cisco networking lab

The lab will enable students to conduct networking research and undertake certified training courses

Swinburne University of Technology has launched a new networking lab for students.

The university’s dean for the faculty of information and communication technologies, Professor Leon Sterling, said the lab, located at the university’s Hawthorn campus, would also offer certified Cisco training programs.

"The lab is particularly important in the context of developing large-scale broadband networks and will provide industry-accredited training to both higher education and TAFE students,” Sterling said in a statement.

"This facility gives students greater access to networking equipment and the use of virtual systems allows students to develop very large networks.”

The lab will enable students to connect computers within the room to different physical networking devices through the use of virtual networks.

It allows each student individual access to one kit of equipment including four routers and four switches during each session, as well as remote access so students can learn at their own pace.
